If you’re like me and scoffed at Microsoft’s prediction that they would sell five million Kinect units before the end of 2010, you’re likely eating your hat after watching their CES Conference. Not only did they top those expectations but they annihilated them. Microsoft announced that they have sold eight million Kinect units in the first 60 days of the device’s life. To be fair, 60 days from its launch date does extend a few days past the end of 2010, but still, those numbers are crazy impressive.
Slightly less impressive were their Xbox Live user figures. The total number of subscribers has now reached 30 million. With Xbox Live expanding its reach even further onto PC’s, and Windows phones for the first time, it’s likely that figure will start growing at an even faster pace.
UPDATE: It seems that, once again, the term ‘sold’ has been used rather loosely. A Microsoft spokesperson has now clarified that Kinect has shipped eight million units.

I don’t like numbers like this, how do you know if they are reporting sales to retail or sales to gamers?!

Why couldn’t sony advertise more like microsoft?

I sit here and sigh sadly at how strongly I agree with you. Sony would do themselves so many favours if they just realised they need to promote their products shamelessly and intensely…. just like MS do. It’s a massive industry and there are no Get Out Of Jail Free cards.

I dont understand why Sony don’t just use the US PS3 adverts for the UK. MS do. The US ps3 ads are awesome. Sony’s UK marketing team need firing.

Because Sony like to make money and Microsoft like to sell at any cost (because they can afford to). Given the choice between 4 million units and a tidy profit vs 8 million units that just about covers the marketing budget Sony would choose the former and Microsoft would choose the latter…
Besides Move can’t be doing too badly, I tried to buy a second controller the other day and can’t find them in stock anywhere – plenty of Kinects still about though…

I’ve seen no clarification from anyone about that number, and the internet would likely explode if there was.
Their exact wording was:
“In the first 60 days, we sold over 8 million Kinect sensors, worldwide.”

Ok, let me go ahead and light the fuse… I’ll do it right after I get my foot out of my mouth.
You were right. Good call.

A brave things to admit.
Frankly I don’t like it that Kinect sold this manu units(I know it’s not 8 mil but it’s still a huge figure). Can’t really explain the feeling either.

Not bad. You see they have sold to the unaware Mums and Dads of the world. With a 500 mill advertising budget I would be surprised if some Wiis start gathering dust in those Old Peoples Homes soon if MS can sort there pricing out. 4GB 360s are pointless….

The old people mainly played Wii Fit didn’t they?
Both the Wii & Move don’t seem to be able to compete with Kinect in this particular genre, it’s one thing that Kinect looks like it excels at – Other stuff, maybe not so much.

Is there any updated figures on PS Move per chance? Not trying to incite any wars here just genuinely interested. I would like to see how many of those 8 million were actually bought, used and returned though. One of my brother’s firends got a kinect fro xmas and it’s gathering dust as we speak!

I am sure this includes the Kinect in the bundles as well (and it should).

I wish both Sony and MS would be a little clearer (read: less misleading) when making these announcements.
Still an impressive figure regardless and with 8 mil shipped it’s a good bet that they’ve actually sold at least the 5mil they said they would.
I rushed out and got Move as soon it released and both my Move controllers and nav controllers have just been sitting there with out use, so while i’m genuinely interested in Kinect, i think i’ll wait until there are a few more games that interest me or my kids. Or at least until it’s been properly integrated into the UI.
