Despite being agreed on back in 2009, it has been announced that the PEGI games classification system will not be rolled out until July at the earliest, missing its April 1st launch. This is the second time a delay has occurred, with the original date set to be some time in 2010.
Conservative culture minister Ed Vaizey had the following to say:
“There’s been some technical delays to iron out a few kinks – nothing fundamental, nothing serious. And we’ll crack on with it as fast as we can.”
Won’t somebody please think of the children?!

TSA: Rated 18

Yep. But with the tuffcub filter in place it’s down to 12

Few Kinks? Man the job cant be that hard? Surely not?

I’m not being funny, but are people supposed to take an agency charged with the suitable rating of games seriously when they can’t even get their house in order for the initial launch… or the one after that?
JoshHood
This has become such a farce now.

I still don’t get what is so wrong with the BBFC – it’s a ratings system that has applied to entertainment for years and is understood nationwide.
Lets be honest – age ratings mean nothing anyway as most parents don’t even acknowledge what classification a game has, just that little Johnny’s friends all have it and he’ll be quiet for a week if we buy it.
Bladesteel
As a parent I resent being thrown in with that group.
I am aware of game age ratings, and like movie age ratings they are a guidance. If the kid wants a game I will research it, and possibly play it (or preferably a demo) and then decide if I think it’s appropriate for her. I may end up allowing something with a higher age rating, but it will never be a mindless decision made to “shut up her nagging”.
I’m more worried about the things that the ratings don’t tell you, such as “This game will teach your kid that women should be big breasted anorexic airheads” or “It’s ok to smack other little (sack) people with frying pans” ;)
Also even if the game is rated as ok for her age there will be the two remaining questions “Is the game crap” and “Is the difficulty right”

Excuse my ignorance, but what’s happening to the PEGI system?
BIGAL-1992
In britain, the pegi system is replacing the bbfc system in the rating of video games.
Grey_Ghost13
Unless they have “enforcers” going round checking that this new classification system is adhered to it will fail just like the last one. As anyone ever heard of a shop being fined for selling games to those under age? But I’ve heard of many barstaff and pubs that have been fined and lost their licences for selling drink to miners.
Person678
Really? But all those coal miners need to relax after a hard days work.
jediryan123
Zing!
Grey_Ghost13
*Tips hat* I walked into that one!
Person678
Good, I’ll be 16 then.

So, are the PEGI ratings that appear on trailers downloaded off of PSN not ‘official’?
eye8have9you3
Well they’re ‘official’ in the sense that they’re a european standard rating but they aren’t legally enforceable in the uk. atm any game rated over 18 by the PEGI system has to be re-rated by the BBFC, which the government think is confusing for parents
mugsybalone
So the rollout they’re talking about being delayed is the process of making it enforceable and replacing the BBFC rating on games, then?
Charmed_Fanatic
Launching on April 1st would have been a joke anyway
cam_manutd
I studied media at uni and I do it at uni now…last year I had a seminar at the BBFC and they said that the guys there played the games to rate them…PEGI dont play them apparently and the BBFC are sensible with thier ratings.
