Guerrilla Speaks Out About Killzone 3 Controls

Despite being one of the most popular PlayStation 3 games of all time, there were a lot of people that thought Killzone 2’s controls were not up to par. Guerrilla listened, and they made it one of their top priorities when going in to Killzone 3.  While some people chalked it up to the ‘weighty feel’ that Killzone is known for, Guerrilla themselves has said it was more than just that.  While speaking to Edge Magazine, Game Director, Mathijis de Jonge, had this to say on the subject.

“[The] thing with Killzone 2 was there were some quite technical problems in the controls, actually, and I think we’ve solved those now.

[While] we were still tweaking and checking framerate, I checked this game back-to-back with Killzone 2 and have to say that it plays so much more fluidly. Also, the adjustments we made to lean-and-peek – you can actually slide into cover now, vault over, brutally melee your enemies – it feels more fluid, stutters less. There’s fewer points of irritation.”

While a lot of people immediately dropped Killzone 2 because of the way it handled, I personally liked it and would hate nothing more than to see it lose the feeling that made it seem unique among other shooters.  Luckily, Guerrilla says that they’ve tried to preserve the original experience, although they have confessed to ditching some of the extra weight.

“There was a lot of lag… by fixing those issues we’ve lost a bit of that weighty feeling. We’ve tried to maintain that original experience, but if we’d kept it as slow, we’d run into the danger of losing some people, moving too far away from our competitors”

Mathijis also took the time to mention the single player experience and how they’ve worked hard to keep the locations varied and fresh. **Warning** Possible Spoilers Below!

“We’re going from the Helghast interpretation of jungle to very Killzone-esque scrapyards, and at the end we go into space. It’s a big departure from Killzone 2, where the first five levels were all urban settings.”

Killzone 3 is only just over a month away so you won’t have to wait long to see first hand what Mathijis is talking about.
