Pride and Tense, the two feelings I’ve been subject to over the past week or so in relation to TSA’s Folding@home team.

Pride and the thought of “WOW”
As I peered on as TSA’s folding@home team had its growth spurt. We seem to have doubled our output thanks to, what it would seem, the influence of mainly one person. No, not me, I just gather willing folk together, then you do the  work along with me.

Tense and the thought of uncertainty
There’s only one word to describe the past few hours, and that’s tense. Will we or won’t we make that magical milestone that we’ve been after for five long months? Some said it was doubtful, but I remained optimistic. With 12 hours to go would we be able to get 25,000 points folded, and with 3 hours left how would we manage 7,000? So was the optimism justified? Well, you’ll just have to read on.

Come on, Join in

There’s never a day that TSA doesn’t have a community related post on the front page, whether it be Halbpro’s Weekly Discussion, Teflon’s GT5 What car feature, or even the spangly new podcast. That’s because it’s never fun to put out content for a single person, and it’s never as much fun playing on your own than with a collection of like minded folk. Which is why we don’t ask you to join folding@home as an individual but as a team, working with each other to push ourselves higher and higher up Stanford’s leader-board. So come on, join in on one of TSA’s features that makes our community great. All you have to do is download the correct software for your OS and enter 78731 as your team number and your TSA user name as your folding user name.

So, onwards with this months numbers.

Team Information

This Month Last Month Change Score New Points Work Units
575 603 28 10,766,384 1,002,153 36,340

As you can see we passed the 1 million mark! I’ll set the wheels in motion to get those 3 £20 vouchers out to the winners, who will be announced next week.

Team Radar

So this we we took SCEA SD FPQA, which, when translated, presumably stands for Sony Computer Entertainment America: San Diego, First Party Quality Assurance. I know the first two collection of letters are right, the last 4 were a complete guess.

As for the others we are still yet to overtake, some were dropped for more well known teams which we are now due to overtake.

New Members

Over January we had a staggering 22 new members joining with one member shooting straight into 23rd, and as I said earlier, this person seemed to put a strain on some of our older folders, namely RedStarGlow and GTOWN, who are now folding more than ever. This is very good for the team, we’ll be in the top 500 before you can say “I’m not folding clothes, I’m folding science stuff”

  1. Wow! Good job folders on reaching that 1 million mark. You all deserve a huge pat on the back and biscuits.

    • I’ll pass on the pat of the back but these bisquits you are hopefuly offering would be rather appreciated :)

  2. Have we cured any diseases yet?

  3. I realised very recently that my work PC was no longer folding due to duff proxy settings! I have rectified that so should get some decent scores back in this month.
I also want to do more with the PS3 but GT5 B-Spec endurance races are it’s bread and butter just at the moment!

    • I’m like that too, I’ve got a 9 hour and 2 24 hours to do, so instead of folding whilst I’m at uni, it’ll be b-speccing.
But at least the i7′s munching away.

  4. I’m folding on as many devices as I can get my hands on… wonder if anyone will notice if our Domain Controllers did a bit of folding? Lol

  5. Yay for hitting the million mark :D My eleccy bil wasn’t too high this quater, so I might start leaving a playstation on all the time folding, or my PC. Always been scared too incase it rockets my bill xD but I do what I can!

  6. How do you join the team??

    • On a PC right click on the system tray icon and select Configure, then enter 78731 in Team Number.
It will be something similar with PS3. I think pressing triangle gets you the settings menu.

  7. I am definitely going to start folding, given that I go to boarding school. How safe is it, though, to leave your ps3 24/7?

    • *ps3 ON 24/7

      • I’ve had mine on and folding for a week straight before and it was fine. I should imagine many people leave theirs running for much longer, I just wanted to give the electricity usage a rest

      • eh not good.

      • Stanford have a few PS3′s running 24/7, so you should be good.

      • My fat ps3 is on 24/7 for months :)
But I only do this most of the year; when Summer comes we get temperatures between 30 and 40 degrees and it’s just so hot inside my house that a ps3 off is nicer than on ;)

    • My slim PS3 is on constantly. 95% folding and 5% gaming, I reckon.

  8. Glad we managed to achieve the 1 million a month milestone.

  9. Well done guys! I’ve already done 5 WU in two days so I hope to beat my total last month of 38.

  10. Bloody awesome, Jas-n! I’m so very pleased. Pleased for my slim PS3 that’s been quietly hammering away all last month like a mute visitor to a brothel. But equally pleased for the entire TSA time as it really felt like the million mark was going to remain out of reach. Congrats to all!
