PS3 To Drop To £180 This Year?

MCV are running with an interesting piece this morning with regards to the gaming industry expecting a fresh wave of console price cuts to reinvigorate the UK market. Sony is expected to make an announcement at Gamescom, bringing the PS3’s rrp down to £199.99. Retailers may cut that even further, to £180.

Speaking to MCV, Codemasters boss Rod Cousens had the following to say:

“It’ll probably happen around September and Gamescom may be interesting. But there’s also time for a further cut next year, before Wii U is out.”

If this does happen you can bet Microsoft will respond, and it also raises the question of what price bracket Nintendo plans to place the Wii U in. Nintendo’s new baby may come with a fancy controller, but a PS3 at £180 is an extremely tempting prospect.

  1. By that time the 360 will be a tenner.

    • And then it will be overpriced.

      • har har… :P

      • But they will throw in a bonus EyeT…. I mean Kinect ;)

    • Lol tenner!
      Still overpriced though xD

  2. Screw console drops.. for me i’d be much grateful if they dropped the price of retail games…

    • I know this won’t go down well but I actually think they are mostly pretty fairly priced given the work that goes into some these titles, I have a dable with C++ myself and believe me its not easy.

      • Agreed, and considering the time you get out of them, compared to a Film, not bad value.

      • Nobody has to get a game on day one , a huge amount of us wait a few months and pick it up for £25 . I only buy the great games i have no duffers in my collection .

      • I agree with MinerWilly, anyone who purchases any game they want for $60 at launch and then complains isn’t very intelligent. I personally think all games should launch at $40 or less, it’s one of the reasons I’m a handheld gamer.

    • Games are cheaper here in the UK than a lot of countries in Europe.

      • So true. I couldn’t believe it when my friend told me how much the Borderlands GOTY is where he lives. Double what we can get it for in the UK!

  3. I wonder what Nintendo are thinking? Even if you don’t play videogames, PS3 at £180 is a sorely tempting piece of kit considering everything else it can do.

  4. Since my PS3 is going to die at some point this year, and if this is true then this is excellent news.:D*gives his aging fat 80gb PS3 the evils* But if MS drop the price of the xbox 360 then Sony will drop the price even more. I smell a pricing war.

    • I love the smell of discounts in the morning.

      • So do i but the smell of coffee in the morning is much better.:)

  5. The PS3 drops to £199 and then a few months later the Vita is released at £230/£280 price points.

The value of the PS Vita will be damaged by this in the eyes of a lot of the public. Shame as the Vita is a nice bit if kit at a decent price.

    • You make a very good point there Sparky.

  6. If they make it £150 I’ll get another

  7. Hopefully get a good deal when my Mrs phone contract is due for renewal then, I’ve upgraded my PS3 several times using this method ensuring I’m always under warranty.

X360 will always be price leader though, but this will put Nintendo on a sticky wicket as I can’t see how they’d be able to do a console with a tablet controller for less than 250

    • Kinect and Move are still rather costly though, if you wanted to do that sort of comparison with Nintendo.

  8. Cool, But considering I’m up for getting a console in August I don’t know which one to get, I might get a cheap 360 to tide me over till the PS3 price cut.

  9. A Ps3 + Vita combo bundle for £329-379 wouldn’t be bad at all and it’s achievable (with profit). Something Sony really should bear in mind to spread their user base both for Ps3 and for Vita.

    • Now that I would be interested in.

  10. If its £180 I’ll buy 2.

    • why?

      • Because we love our PS3 i’d guess

      • One for each TV in the house?
I have 3 and 1 360. Two PS3 in my room and 1 PS3 and 360 downstairs. Although one in my room did get YLOD two years ago so I got another PS3.
