Superannuation has discovered a couple of interesting links on the ’whois’ website. It appears that Microsoft has registered ‘Microsoft-Sony.com’ and ‘Sony-Microsoft.com’.
A new, cheeky marketing campaign? The other options are unthinkable…

This has a Mac vs PC ad campaign feel to it. Don’t you think?

Agreed. Maybe they just want to deny their use as sites by others to stop comparison?…

The day Sony hooks up with M$ is the day I abandon the PS3 and start playing games via Steam on my Mac.

I like the way you carefully weighed the benefits and disadvantages in a well set out argument, before coming to a final, informed decision.
Jeez.

The thing is the PlayStation brand is competing with XBOX brand. Sony is not competing with Micrsoft.

I’m sure “Sony” is a registered trademark, can anybody just use it for a web-domain?

Which implies some sort of deals.

Or an upcoming lawsuit ;) But I honestly have no idea how the registration of websites works or how it’s regulated.

Back in the day of the great domain gold rush of ’94 anybody could register any name as long as you payed the fees, alot of money was made. seriously you could register BMW.com and then try to sell it to BMW, but they didn’t have to buy it. Nowadays I’d assume one corporation using a direct competitors name would surely be grounds for an injunction.

You can register anything as a domain. But if it’s considered to infringe on someone elses product, brand, etc then the ownership of that domain can be taken away from you and transfered to the company that owns it.
iCloud.com, I think, was one that Apple tried to get passed onto them. But as it was registered well before Apple came up with the iCloud moniker for their cloud offering there’s nothing they can do but try to buy it up off the owner.

Microsoft didn’t seem keen on FFXIV cross compatability with PC and PS3.. :(

Doesn’t Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 already do that (PS3 and X360, I mean, not PS4 and X720)?
Sure, it’s just one game, but it means that it’s possible.

Be nice if that did happen but MS have a locked of system which means unless they change the policy I doubt it will happen.
Just look at Portal 2, PS3 can play with PC players.
Or hypothetically it could be something along the lines of a cloud for letting media get played across both consoles?
