Ubisoft’s Yves Guillemot believes that Nintendo’s announcement of Wii U (and the assumption that it’s going to be out soon) will force Sony and Microsoft to play their ‘next-gen’ hands before long.

“I think it’s sending the message that the new transition is going to happen,” he said in an interview with Gamasutra, referring to the new Wii console, “and we’re going to have new machines coming soon.”

Ubisoft’s chairman and CEO always readies plenty of games for a console’s launch (look at the 3DS for proof) so it’s interesting to hear that he’s confident the other two console manufacturers won’t have much breathing space.

The interview’s interesting, not least because it comments on the development time versus return of titles like Just Dance against Assassin’s Creed…

  1. Please don’t be graphics, please don’t be graphics *repeat

I just hope that they don’t get anything like the RROD and that the cost isn’t too high.

    • what do you mean by please don’t be graphics?

    • Why are you people so inclined graphics should be s***? There aren’t many games which have truly extraordinary graphics and even there there are shortcomings, i mean – most of them look awfully anyway!

  2. What on earth could a PS4 do that a PS3 can’t? Games are already as realistic as they’re going to look, there’s very little room for innovation any more.

If anyone says motion controls I will come to your house and BURN you.

    • 1080p & 60 frames per second, better AI, physics etc.

      • Apart from the things jcor mentions, there’s also a way to go graphically. Current gen is capable of awesome graphics, but I don’t think it will stop until you literally can’t tell the difference between real life and real-time, in-game CGI.

      • May I direct sir to Wipeout HD on PS3, 1080p, 60fps.

      • Even then, Wipeout HD isn’t true 1080p, the resolution of it dynamically scales on maintain the frame rate, it can go as low as 1280×1080 and will still screen tear too.

As jcor said, there is a lot of room for improvement yet with resolution, textures, frame rate, AF, AA, lighting, AI, etc.

    • I’m not saying I want a new console to come out anytime soon, I’m just giving examples of what a new generation of comsoles could manage. A lot of games on the current generation of consoles struggle to maintain their framerates at the moment.

    • If you compare PS3 graphics to high-end PC graphics there is quite a difference.

      • Yep. Really starting to see it now with things as simple as Portal 2. Played it on the PC. Turned around to see it on the PS3 and thought “oh”. Did it alter the fun? Not one bit. Still, it’s good to know that the Playstation brand will see a console update in the next two years or so.

      • True, but there may also be quite a difference if you compare prices… ;)

    • “Games are already as realistic as they’re going to look.” I hope not & doubt this is the case. I think we’ll go all the way, to exactly that.

      • 100% realistic graphics that is.

      • Where appropriate, obviously cartoon graphics will always have a place & rightfully so.

    • Buy a decent pc rig for £500 and you’ll eat your words! Next gen visuals are breathtaking along with real time shadows and individual npc Ai!
GTA IV with the ICE mod is wonderful!

And the new crysis dx11 patch is surreal!

All the features of the next gen is in there!

Well to end it I’d say we need a PS4! And a ram upgrade would be handy so that physics and draw distance would be much better! And it could support “x game chat” with a system built in noise interference cleaner ;)

      • Thats not GTA IV!!!

      • i hate you.

You may have just cost me £500

    • It could do Cross game chat xD

Memory won’t be limited to 256MB like it is now. The XMB won’t be slow when playing PS3 exclusives, graphics will be improved greatly if they add two ATI Radeo 6XXX GPU’s, up the Cell Broadband to another core and more SPE’s.

Pause games and do something else, better web browser. Full 1080p 3D. Someone said an open world like GTA with 1080p graphics will need PC power which PS3 and 360 clearly do not have.

But with every PlayStation, a new optical drive has come, CD, DVD, Blu Ray and I don’t think Sony will use Blu ray again or will they? Hmm

The Wii U is going to fail at getting good hardcore games, I just know it. Maybe MS will release a console but I don’t think Sony will until 2015 as 360′s DVD is seriously limiting it.

  3. Well thats interesting, THQ wont be happy as they said.. “It still costs us a fortune to make games on this platform. If they’re going to up the scale, up the art, up the content, I don’t know how to make that and sell it to anybody for under $100 a game. “

  4. It might very well force next-gen, but will Wii U be a match for the next-gen consoles?

    • I’m yet to be convinced that Wii-U will be a match for current-gen consoles, considering all we’ve seen so far are one tech demo and footage from PS3 and 360.

      • In all honesty i’m inclined to agree with that too, but as they haven’t shown anything yet there’s room for them to surprise with the Wii U but it would have to be something very special to keep it afloat once Sony and MS launch their next consoles.( very special : i.e. not a gimmicky lo-res handheld screen imo.)

      • Of course we also have to keep in mind the success of the Wii … dammit ;)

  5. I don’t think Sony should rush into anything and I hope that they don’t.

  6. I’m hoping for a gaming system, but also a full multimedia system too. A bit better and more user friendly like a PC.

    • Not that i necessarily disagree with you, but why wouldn’t you just get a PC?

      • Not the same wealth of games, at least the franchises i’ve come to love, additional blu-ray hardware costs & no intergrated store. The community on a console is unsurpassed imo. (no friend list.)

  7. Hasn’t there been previous comments that the Wii was practicly a PS2/X Box gen console anyway? Which would then sort of make this a current gen console.

I don’t think Sony or MS would just rush in to compete, the Wii has already been proven as the more family orientated console, and Nintendo, to me, will always say family console so my (probably flawed) logic says Wii U will be family orientated even having a controller/screen combo “aimed at more hardcore gamers”.

But maybe thats just me :)

  8. I don’t really get the point of the Wii u. I think it’ll fail to sell in a similar way to the 3ds. This is the way I look at it – people who buy Nintendo aren’t really arsed about graphics, hd, 3d, high end performance etc. They are typically interested in the motion control fun games, or touch screen fun games. Obviously this is a generalization and doesn’t apply to everyone, but all those old grannies that bought the ds for brain training couldn’t give a toss about 3d, and all those housewives that bought the Wii for Wii fit couldn’t give a toss about hd or any other high spec thing. So, people who own a ds or Wii won’t upgrade to the new console as they’re not interested in what it can do, above what their current device already does. There are obviously exceptions to this, which is why some 3ds have sold, but it’ll never sell as many as the ds, nor the Wii u will never sell as many as the Wii, because a lot of people own the old version and aren’t arsed about upgrading.

    • You are confusing “Nintendo buyers” with the Wii buyers. the DS and 3DS, which is now picking up sales, have had more varied mature games than the Wii. Most gamers cut their gaming teeth on a Nintendo machine, up until now when they grow and want to move on to mature gaming on a home console, they have had no choice, but to buy and Xbxo or PS3. Now they will be able to stay with the brand that they grew up gaming with. This is the market Nintendo are aiming for, not fans of other machines.

  9. If the Wii U really is only up to the graphical power of the PS360 then I highly doubt that it will force next gen, more like Nintendo are playing catch up in the graphics race. Consumers and most developers who aren’t ubisoft do not want the next gen yet. It would be illogical to release them before 2014 I feel.

    • well, it is not important what it is actually capable of. It is only important what the consumer is made to believe it is capable of. Or if it will make current gen machines look “old”

  10. I for one hope that the whole tech arms-race doesn’t start up again. All that does is produce over-priced and under-tested hardware which fanboys from both sides latch on to and claim that it’s “just betta” than the other one. Nintendo can and will do whatever they like and chances are it will sell very well because that’s what they do. Unless the next gen from Sonysoft offers something genuinely worthwhile I won’t invest.
