THQ CEO Brian Farrell has said that Red Faction: Armageddon is to be the last game in the franchise as it “did not resonate with a sufficiently broad console gaming audience.”
In a recent investor call Farrel said,
“Given that that title now in two successive versions has [only] found a niche, we do not intend to carry forward with that franchise in any meaningful way.
In today’s hit-driven, core gaming business, even highly-polished titles with a reasonable following like Red Faction face a bar that continues to move higher and higher.”
Red Faction: Armageddon has a Metacritic rating of around 73 but THQ will be reviewing its output to ensure higher quality games.

I’ve tried and tried but I’ve really struggled to get into the 3 Red Faction games I’ve played, I don’t know what it is – the setting, destruction mechanic and deep stories are all elements right up my street but I just can’t enjoy them for some reason.

Putting it simply: They should’ve stuck with FPS’. The first two Red Factions were excellent.

Couldn’t agree more.

Yep, I think they got too caught up in the destruction mechanics and turned it into a disposable arcade game.

Mmmhm. I never really got along with the current generation series even with Guerilla, such a shame when the first two were some of the finest FPS blasting available on PS2 despite their age.

“They should’ve stuck with FPS.” RF1 rocked.

“They should’ve stuck with FPS.” RF1 rocked. Couldn’t believe when I first seen them use 3rd person & poorly executed too. I hope starhawk will show them how it’s done. (although I fear s.hawk may also not have a shoulder switch, for navigating obstacles from the left.)

Yeah, nah. It wasn’t a huge success then, its not a huge success now. Red Faction was never big, that’s why its ditched.

If you think about it Red Faction had a huge following on PS2 and if theyd stuck with FPS they could have have had something that rivalled Battlefield , Killzone , Resistance and the CoD series on PS3 .
Personally i loved Guerilla though ! I knew something bad was on the cards when i saw the latest game on HUKD yesterday brand new for £14.99 !

I actually really liked Guerilla, but i got put right off of Armageddon by the fact that it wasn’t open world anymore & hadn’t been reviewing as well as i had hoped.
A lot of people say that they made a mis-step by going 3rd person instead of 1st, but i personally think that the real mis-step was confining the experience to tunnels, making enemies much more generic & toning down the amount of destruction you could do in Armageddon.
I think that if they had actually made a ‘true’ successor to Guerilla instead of something that is widely felt as a step back for the series, it would have been much more successful.
I would have bought it at least.

Loved guerilla but armageddon was a real step back for me. This is a big shame though, great franchise which I hope someone continues.

Red Faction: Guerilla was great had brilliant time with Multiplayer and destructions, but I have never played Armageddon but from what I heard and by the looks of it, I decided not to buy it sadly. I really do miss the FPS Red Faction back then!

This seems sensible, better to admit defeat and focus on making a profit than blaming second hand sales of unpopular games for losing money!

Woav according to VG, Armageddon hhas only moved 230.000 units globally :o Now that can kill any game franchise.
But good call THQ.

I also loved Guerilla,Armageddon was much the lesser game but with volition doing saints 3 open world i guess there was a chance of competing with their own product.

I hope someone at THQ realises that the FPS Red Faction games were brilliant and decide to make a new franchise that was similar to RF1 and RF2.
