It’s official: Sony just announced the price cut for PlayStation 3 at their Gamescom show in Cologne. As we reported earlier, the price cut was hinted at by retailers discounting their old stock nice and early but this official announcement means that we’ll start seeing everyone charging the new prices from now on.
Prices announced were for global reductions but in Euros, Dollars and Yen, with no sterling equivalents so we’ll have to see how the exchange rate treats us on this side of the channel. They also neglected to announce reductions in relation to each hdd model. They just said it would be reduced to €249, which, we assume is for the 320GB version.
With retailer discounts, we could see prices fall even lower than that. It looks like this might be a strong Q4 for Sony in the west, even without the Vita.
Update: MCV’s Editor in Chief has said that the UK price has been confirmed to them at £199. Again, we assume that’s for the 320GB model.

Out of curiousity, would this affect the pricing of the Vita?

No.
The Vita is still €249.

if its the 320gb model that would work out at £217. I’m guessing they’ll be cut to £210 and their lower (or is it raise?) the difference from the 160 gb to the 320gb from £50 to £40. making the 160gb £170. as the 160gb is already having £50 knock off by retailers so I’m guessing were see the final pricing for that at £140 and the 170gb at £180.

That is truly excellent value now and should help bring in new customers over the Xmas period. Good job Sony.

In a few weeks retailers will no doubt have it around £169-£179 then, maybe?

Have u tried going into Safe mode and letting it do some rebooting. I had trouble with the blu ray drive after I accidentally cut the power when it was turning on, and the PS knowledge centre had all this stuff on getting it into safe mode. It worked.

Just remember what it was at launch, a massive achievement, especially as they once lost about £80 a unit didn’t they?

£200 for a 320GB PS3. Sold! I may be needing a new PS3 within the next 6-9 months, so this is excellent news for me. Now to get the £200. Shiot.
