Is the topic of the PSN Pass the most hotly debated thing on TheSixthAxis for a while?

Most certainly, and whilst the whole thing kicked off way before either Sony or Insomniac were wanting it to, the official reveal brought plenty of comments with many feeling that the concept of having to pay extra to play online unless you bought a game brand new was a little unfair – to say the least.

Regardless, as the quick shots of the press kit show, it’s very much real.  We’ve obviously blurred out the code (as it’s not been entered yet) but you’ll see how the sticker looks and although the retail boxes will be obviously different we’d assume that the code will be printed in a similar way on the store-bought versions.

And yes, that’s Resistance 3, the first game that’ll use the new Online Pass system.

You can read my thoughts on online passes here, amongst other things, and we’ve got a full hands on with Resistance 3 at this link and an interview with the developers here.

Review soon.

  1. If it came on a 7″ vinyl, even I’d buy into it. As it stands though I’ve made my disapproval known many times over

  2. What was on the other disc? Or is it just 2 copies of the game?

  3. Why has no-one mentioned the little packet of, what looks like, R3 army men! Can someone confirm what they are?

  4. Not really bothered by the pass, just hope it’s removable and doesn’t ruin the art style of the box. will the retail version disc look like that? looks classy

  5. i don’t really buy pre-owned so it doesn’t bother me, as long as me and my bf can play the same game on the same ps3 and not buy a second pass all is well.

  6. I’m buying Resistance 3 just because of that super awesome blu ray design, damn!

    • make sure you buy the special edition then as the normal version of resistance 3 is not like a vinyl record.

  7. what people should be more worried about imo is how MW3 has a retail price of 44.99 I will never pay that much for any game BF3 is 36.99 Activision are ripping us of way more than online pass.

    • They can get away with it. Even if it was £60, people would buy it and it’s sales wouldn’t suffer.

People NEED the latest COD so they’d pay the rip off price. Battlefield doesn’t have the COD factor or fun factor whatsoever so EA can’t get away with a £45 price point.

      • “fun factor” Call of Duty doesn’t have this, I have every COD and still refuse to pay the £45, I play them and I hate them and only play them as my friends don’t play anything else. It’s a complete rip off

    • You shouldn’t be.

Because when people have become used to and accepted online passes they will be looking for more ways to squeeze money out of us. New games will have a pass to unlock the final part of the story, or vital equipment or gameplay part. Then when we get used to that the will stop selling the codes separately killing reselling or lending games off once and for all. Finally they’ll start calling them “optional” parts of the game, you have to have a code (to prevent reselling) _and_ pay for the “online/boss/equipment passes”

Anyone that have a little experience knows how all big business eventually turn evil if they become to powerful in their market and are left unchecked. We shouldn’t expect the game industry to be any different
