WeView: WipEout HD

There was a mix up and I wrote this a week ago. Well, I’m writing this now but it will go live in a week. So I apologise if something has happened to erase WipEout from the space-time continuum in this coming week. If it has, let’s just pretend we’re all talking about F-Zero.

WipEout HD should be a fairly popular game (if it still exists). After all, it’s been given away to all PlayStation Plus members and it was part of the Welcome Back Pack after the PSN downtime. That doesn’t mean you enjoyed it, though, does it? So, as always, we’d like to know what you thought of it, don’t hold back because you might have got it for free, and don’t be overly harsh because you paid for it when you could have got it for free. Just state your honest, beautifully articulated opinion.

WipEout is a great game – at least I think so – racing without wheels is quite literally the future and it’s a lot of fun. It looks beautiful too, there’s no denying that seeing WipEout HD in 1080p is marvellous. But that’s enough of my opinion, Alex scored it a 8/10 in his review, praising the graphics but stating that it is just an upgraded version of Pulse.

If you’re excited for today’s PSN update and can’t wait to get your hands on HD then you’ve got a solidly crafted, highly playable and visually stunning upgrade of Pulse.  If you’re expecting much more than that, well, you’ll be disappointed.  It’s a game that surely proves that the PS3 is capable of 60fps 1080p graphics, something it does with aplomb, but there’s nothing here we haven’t already seen before.  A tricky one, to be sure, and the budget price offsets the issue slightly, but we’d love to hear what you think once the download appears on the Store later today.

I can’t agree, since I’ve never actually played Pulse – but I agree it’s a solidly crafted game. You might think it controls horribly, looks grotesque and lacks fun, or you might agree; whatever it is, we’d like to know. You know the drill.

What? You don’t? Oh, okay then, as per usual you should head over to the forums and leave us your thoughts on the game. Whilst we’re not going to discount longer reviews, please remember that the aim is for short, snappy opinions. More than that we simply don’t have the time to wade through longer reviews, so if you want to have your opinion included in the verdict post try to keep it short.

Once you’ve written your review make sure you give it a score on the Buy It, Bargain Bin It, Rent It, Avoid It scale. Remember, if you want your score and opinion included in Monday’s verdict post you need to have it done by Sunday afternoon, otherwise the post’ll be written and you’ll be left out in the cold.

  1. Quite possibly the best looking game on PS3. 1080p does wonders, along with the vital 60hz for a game of this speed.

If it had all new tracks, rather than revamps of the PSP ones, I reckon it would’ve been the highest rated PS3 game on metacritic.

  2. This and Warhawk set the standard for PSN games, and pretty much everything since has seemed weak in comparison.

  3. Love this game although at many times, it made me want to throw the controller trough the window with me following it.

  4. Great game. Awesome soundtrack. Fantastic visuals.

Playing the Zone mode makes me feel like the astronaut at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

  5. Sebenco Climb is my only slight criticism. It’s just toooooo hard!

  6. Best looking game on this gens consoles and my first platinum. Best value game ever for me, have put in about 300 hours into it. I have to say I am a bit of a fan.

It is a difficult game though, not one you can pick up and play, the tracks and the various ships have to be learnt before you can go fast, but when you do, fast is hardly the correct word.

    • woah, the Plat………….a couple fot he trophies are insanely difficult!

      • I blame my spelling on it being before 10am……

  7. Probably the PS3 game I have spent most time playing & it was great to finally finish it. Really should have gone back to it & got all the golds! Hopefully it will get a new lease of life when 2048 is released on vita!
Are the reviews just concentrating on HD version, or is Fury allowed too?

  8. The best racer of all time.

  9. Not the biggest fan. I really don’t think it looked that amazing. far too difficult for me, and I love hard games, so I really didn’t get on well with it. Don’t think I have played it enough though, only a few hours, to give a mini review.

  10. Bought it a week after it came out, got the platinum a few months later, then got the dlc pack, then one of the psp wipeouts, I can safely say, one of my favourites of all time! Can’t wait to see it on the ps vita!
