According to NowGamer, GAME might be struggling to stock new videogame releases.
The site has quoted an unnamed source who said that the retailer has “lost credit assurance with most of its publishers.”
If the company has lost this assurance then publishers will not allow GAME to stock their games due to the financial risk involved. “If true, it could have a huge impact on the upcoming PS Vita launch,” says the story, although doesn’t state that one of the publishers is Sony.
NowGamer’s source also states that staff wages will be withheld in an attempt to make GAME Groups finances appear better than they are, which seems baffling.
We’ve reached out to our contacts at the retailer for comment.
In the meantime, trade magazine MCV has refuted these claims, “we can absolutely confirm that GAME has NOT ‘lost credit assurance with most of its publishers’” it tweeted.
Update: NowGamer seems to have misunderstood or misrepresented the story.
MCV has already been in touch with Game and has been assured that, although there are concerns over the retailers credit insurance (markedly not “assurance”), their relationship with publishers is still good and new releases will, of course, still be available this Friday.
We’re still waiting to hear back from our contacts at Game.
Update 2: We’ve just heard from an anonymous employee at the retailer who told us their pay was late, confirming at least one of the allegations above.
Update 3: It appears it’s the ‘sale or return’ that GAME has lost with the publishers in question, something backed up by Eurogamer. This basically means that any games not sold can’t just be sent back to the publisher, and GAME is being asked to pay upfront for these games now.

Surely this has huge implications for Game – their buyers really have to be on the ball now, or they’re going to be losing sales by not having enough of the latest big-selling titles/losing money by over-stocking a title that doesn’t sell as well as predicted.

Update 2 doesn’t confirm anything. There could be many factors for that “one” employees getting his/her payment late.

I’m with Awayze on this one. A single anonymous employer is not something to report on (with all due respect).

The word “their” is misleading, fella. If you were implying all of the staff at a branch then be specific (meant nicely). Also, if that is the case… oh bugger! :-\

Awesome. Without nofi’s comment I now look splendidly mad. Ha!
How are you, bunimomike? Splendid. And you? Could be better. The old war wound is playing up in the cold but I can’t complain otherwise. Oh… is it raining again? *sigh*

So we can pretty much gather GAME has been having a cash flow problem lately from all the other doom and gloom stories about their finances and losses and we know that the vast majority of their money is made in the last few months of the year so even with the Vita there wont be the greatest amount of cash coming in and now all of a sudden they have to pay for their stock upfront and if they estimate the demand for them wrong they could be sitting on loads of useless stock. Ouch.
I guess this could mean some big sales of games after the first few weeks/month in order to try and shift it as quick as possible before it devalues too much and also more deals like the recent one which allows them to get some cash upfront for something that you might return later.

Similar to Jessops really. There were periods were Samsung for example refused supply. That has been smoothed over, however the business is still in the financial mire and they are still heavily reliant on Canon, who have basically help the company stay alive. As much as I don’t buy from Game too often, it will be a shame to see them disappear

I wonder if the supermarkets might capitalise on this and sell some of Fridays releases at lower prices?. I do feel sorry for game’s staff though

As long as my 2 Mass Effect 3 Collector’s Edition’s aren’t cancelled then it’s all good.

They won’t be cancelled, but there is a good chance that the store won’t be there to pick them up from! :P

Lets organise a “Buy a game from Game day!”
Or something. Their prices are often very high, but the high street will be worse off without them.

Good excuse to go spend those Christmas vouchers I think.
Was holding off for SSX but might think about using them sooner, if they have anything decent in stock.
Not good for the staff if this is true and one less shop for me to look at whilst the wife looks at clothes.
Sadly, usually because of the prices thats all I tend to do, look. Great place to find some new games to then look up elsewhere.

“Good excuse to go spend those Christmas vouchers I think”
Balls, didn’t even think about that! I have £50 sat at home on a gift card that my parents kindly gave me for crimbo. Whilst i don’t think Game will simply disappear overnight, i’d rather not lose that amount of money, so i guess i better get spending soon!
Anyone got any good suggestions on what i should get??
