Which GAME Stores Have Been Closed?

Day one.

Looks like the first day of GAME going administration has been particularly brutal.

As far as I can gather, it looks like the 277 stores that have been shut down (between GAME and Gamestation) have been judged entirely on profit, and those not meaning some magical number have had the dreaded phone call from PricewaterhouseCooper.

That’s 277 stores, or just over 2,000 jobs.  Not, as some found it necessary today, something to make light of.  I’ve had family and friends work in GAME over the years, at various levels, and today has been a real shitter for the UK high street and the industry in general.

My own personal condolences to anyone affected.

No redundancies for the workers in Ireland either.
Not even what they’re entitled to.

Hey, if Vita Cortex could get away with it…

In a similar situation, some GAME employees are considering a similar response, and plan to stage sit-ins.

Wow….. This list, whilst harrowing, shows some of the issues at play with game: 5 stores in Leeds?! And they also close huge numbers of North-west stores (not saying they’re not doing this everywhere, but it’s where I’m most familiar with) Bolton, Blackburn, Preston (x2), Burnley, Accrington, Manchester (x3), Southport, Liverpool (x2), Stockport and Wigan all within a 30-40 mile radius…. Not sure how many are left, I know of at least one in Preston thats not on that list, but that could’ve been shuttered already. Surely it would’ve made some sense to keep one or two open at least til the weekend to see if there was any consolidation of custom? Bad times for staff and bad times for customers….. Can’t say this wasn’t on the horizon a couple of weeks ago, but it’s still a very sad situation

Only two in Co. Cork, the biggest county in Ireland, and both got shut.

the enfield one was open yesterday, the gamestation had a sign in the window that told people to go to game.

if that’s now closed that would leave only one store that, mostly, dedicated to gaming that’s within easy access for me, and that’s cex.

there was an independent in edmonton green, but that closed about a month or so ago.

that means even more of my purchases will be preowned.

what the shortsighted types in the u=industry can’t seem to imagine is that even though game did buy, yeah people, remember they had to buy all their preowned games so they were never pure profit, and sell preowned they will lose out with them gone.
at least i have no doubt they’ll be worse off without them.

anyway, i hope the staff can land on their feet, it’s not easy to find a job these days.
not with so few jobs going and so many people going for them.

Having been through redunancies myself (and who hasn’t in this day and age) I know how crap it feels and really hope those affected go on to bigger and better things.
I just can’t get over how shortsighted the company have been. It’s been obvious for years that having two (or more) stores in the same town is just not sustainable, especially when competing with online retailers who regularly undercut your prices

Well mine’s actually still open but barely has any stock on the shelves so they might as well just close it. Looks pretty forlorn.

My local one in Staines has gone as well, I was never a fan of Game as they always seem to expensive but it is more about the jobs going then the shop itself, feel bad for the staff and hope they find jobs soon

I see one of Coventry’s has gone too, but there’s no mention of the second one.
