The US Navy Wants Your Game Saves

I’ve read this story three times now. I still don’t quite believe it. It seems that the United States Navy is spending $177,237.50 to hire a company called Obscure Technologies.

The contract is to develop hardware and software tools capable of extracting data from videogame consoles and compile a report outlining how they did it and what issues they encountered. Presumably, “invasion of privacy” and “infringement of civil liberties” will be listed fairly high up in the “issues” column.

This project involves furnishing video game systems, both new and used, and creating prototype rigs for capturing data from the video game systems

The official listing for the contract is brazen in its directives. The final destination for the project is with the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology.

Apparently, Obscure Technologies were awarded the contract because they’re the only US company that currently purchases used computer equipment and mines it for data.

  1. But… why?

    • Their americans….. no need for a reason.

“The contract is to develop hardware and software tools capable of extracting data from videogame consoles and compile a report outlining how they did it and what issues they encountered. ”

Does the report outline how they extracted the data, or how the player made his way through the game?

  2. So are they looking for my BF3 save to see if I’m the next John Rambo

    • Love this. They are hiring marines based on your CoD prestige rank. That would be epic

      • Hiring twelve year olds doesn’t sound like a great idea.

    • 1100 kills with the USMC jets in BF3…
I think that makes me a more than adequate candidate for the next US Naval Aviator.

  3. What?

  4. That is literally the weirdest thing i have read in a while, why would they want our game saves?

  5. Good old Uncle Sam. So much for Land of the Free!

  6. Probably best they don’t check saves from nemesis-wonderbra or yogdog. Friendly fire isn’t the most conducive trait to be looking for. Bastards! *rubs back of head from the shotgun pellets from my so-called team-mates* :-)

    • Well, it is the US afterall. As far as I was aware, they’re pretty good at friendly fire!

    • This is the USA. If history is anything to go by then friendly-fire could be part of their training programme.

  7. Yeah – I have absolutely no idea what the point of this would be.

    Bizarre.

  8. To be fair though, $200k is nothing when the US Defence Budget spends over $1 Trillion.
Although that doesn’t explain why they want to do that though.

    Aaaargh……

    • It’s all stored online, rather than on your console.

      There is no escape.
