Free Radical Co-Founder Teams With Rare Vets, Forms Crash Lab

Three projects in the pipeline.

Having departed from Free Radical after the studio’s Crytek takeover in 2009, co-founder Steve Ellis has teamed up with former Rare veterans, Martin Wakeley and Lee Musgrave to establish Crash Lab.

The new developer already has three iOS games in the pipeline with numerous industry connections to other companies. Though there is a possibility that Crash Lab could branch into AAA development, Ellis described how it was “great to have thrown off the shackles of traditional console development and to be able to enjoy the creative freedom of working on titles without exhaustive development cycles.”

As previously mentioned, joining Ellis is Martin Wakeley, who jumped ship to Free Radical after Microsoft’s acquisition of Rare. Lee Musgrave, best know as Rare’s head of art and creator of the Xbox Live Avatar, is also a founding member of Crash Lab, the studio hoping to share information on their latest projects in the near future.
