Whilst technically there’s no risk in waiting to buy a digital game when it comes out, SCEE have added a feature to the PSN Store today that allows users to “pre-order” a download.
Sorcery is the first game to offer this functionality – you can pay for the game now, download it, and then next week it’ll just magically (pun intended) unlock, letting you play the game.
Read our hands on with Sorcery here, but we’re also hearing that many other “big” titles will also be available to pre-order soon.
That’s pretty cool, in our opinion, and resembles the likes of Steam that offer the same kind of deal on the PC and Mac – it’s certainly something that’s exclusive on consoles just now anyway.

I can forsee a situation where people pre-order a game which is then given out free on PS+ and getting annoyed at paying for it though. :P
eg. if Stacking or Awesomenauts had a pre-order option…
bit risky, would rather pre-order at retail and get it early, plus you can cancel if its delayed. Plus you get a physical copy anyway.
Once upon a time, certain games were in limited supply around release day (GTA and one or two others) and preorders made sense. That hasn’t happened for years and is unlikely to happen with digital downloads so i just don’t pre-order anymore. One positive at least, is that they’re not splitting up the pre-order content across several different retailers.
Dubious about this, as it’s SCEE after all. I would point out the description says that it automatically downloads on release, which is ‘expected’ to be the 25th.
This is great, love new functionality to the PS store.

Well will you gain anything for pre-ordering a game? Like something exklusive or anything?
You exclusively get to pay for it weeks in advance!
Well then I really see no use in this :/ especially sense it’s a download. A pre-order discount of 10%-20% would be nice.
Actually, the money isn’t taken until 2 days before release
what’s the point of preordering a download unless you get some kind of bonus for doing so?
and even then, who in their right mind would trust scee to actually deliver on that bonus?
