Stranger’s Wrath HD is fairly widely praised by old fans and newcomers. By all accounts, Just Add Water did a fantastic job with the remake, something a quick trip to Metacritic will confirm.
So it’s odd that Microsoft don’t seem to want it on XBLA. We’ve seen people at JAW fairly regularly mention that the game is being turned down for publication on Microsoft’s digital download service, for one reason or another. First it was their size limitations, then there were suggestions about critical response or sales figures. It’s all a bit weird, really.
Eurogamer is reporting (incorrectly, as it happens) that the game is now definitely not coming to 360. The actual truth of the story seems to be that Microsoft is stubbornly refusing to publish the title so Just Add Water will now be trying to find a third party publisher who will get the title up on XBLA.
When asked, via Twitter if they’d given up on the 360 completely the response was perfectly clear: “just on MS being the publisher. We are talking to 2 3rd party publishers, but nothing is certain.” Of course, as they go on to note themselves, they can’t hang around forever so if the game isn’t snapped up soon, they’ll have to move on. That would be a real shame for those single console gamers who would miss one of the best HD remakes available.
On a related note, the studio’s excellent support for the PlayStation 3 version will get another big shot in the arm next week with a huge patch bringing 3D and Move support, among other enhancements like video capture and upload. Maybe if they found a way to shoehorn Kinect control into it, there’d be more chance of Microsoft paying attention?
Here’s the trailer for that patch, in case you’re on the fence:
