PS Vita Getting PSone Classics In Firmware 1.8, This Summer

The PlayStation Vita was meant to play PSone games from the off, but it never really happened that way. However, Sony have confirmed that the portable will be able to play old school PlayStation titles at some point this summer.

Facilitating the playback of supported titles is a new firmware, which will take the Vita’s system software to version 1.8, although there’s no specific date for the update yet.

Final Fantasy VII and Tomb Raider will be amongst the first games to work.

  1. Better late than never I suppose

  2. Sony on the ball as always I see…

  3. Might persuade me to make a purchase. I’d have all of the MGS games on VIta if I bought one (excluding 4) and that would be the bes thing EVER. I wish they would do a deal with Nintendo for the Pokemon games, although I know this will never happen, it would be awesome! I love those games!

  4. I dunno, maybe in ten or twenty years time i’ll have a hankering to revisit a small selection of psOne games but they don’t hold any interest for me now.

  5. Ok ps1 classics sorted, YouTube sorted. What else is there to moan about?

    • Still no decent upcoming games ;)

      • There’s GT5 Vita that’s just been kind of announced but knowing Polyphony it may be a little while before we see it.
Apart from that there’s very little on the horizon that you would say is a killer game.

    • Remote play

    • They could make the user system work like on the PS3, as in without hastle. That would please me greatly.

  6. I wish Circuit Breakers could become a PSOne download. Loved that game!

    • ….anyway, can’t see my buying much due to the Vita’s awesomeness, however I can’t see the harm in installing the PSOne downloaded games I already have (Resident Evil, MGS, FFVII, FFIX).

  7. Final Fantasy and the Oddworld games are what I need. Make it happen Sony!

  8. This is all well and good but does this mean that we will have to repurchase games that we have already bought? My PSP serves as basically a portable PSone at the moment having piled up a pile of old Psone games over the last few years I wouldn’t be happy would I have to pay for them again. Especially considering Sony doesn’t seemt to understand the concept of depreciating values.

    • I very much doubt that will be the case. You’ll most probably be able to reDL everything yoyu bought through the Store, just like Minis.

  9. got all those FF waiting for this!

  10. Bring. It. On. Might just grab myself a few of the psone classics that are on sale from tomorrrow in anticipation. £3.99 to revisit FFVII is well worth it. Playing this on the Vita sure beats my fusty old childhood bedroom with controller wires all over the show. Let’s mosey on down to Midgar.
