Sony Reveal “New PS3” – UK Pricing Included

[drop2]Sony have announced the new PlayStation 3, right at the beginning of their swiftly paced TGS press conference.

As expected, the new model will come with 12GB flash storage in Europe, but will also come with two hard drive options for the hardcore gamer.

The sizes available are 250GB and 500GB, in white and black. The black PS3 will be out first – on October 4th – and the white version on November 22nd. They’re Japanese dates.

The new device was unveiled by SCE’s Andrew House, and full details are expected soon.

We’re locking down concrete pricing as soon as we can, but it looks something like this:

  • 500GB version: $299 / 29,800 Yen / £240
  • 250GB version: $269 / 24,900 Yen
  • 12GB version: £185

The 12GB is obviously cheaper. Sounds like the Japanese release will get a pack-in with the new Everybody’s Golf (the Vita port we mentioned earlier). It’s 20% smaller and 25% lighter than the current model.

In the States, the 250GB version will include Uncharted 3 Game of the Year Edition, with the larger one being bundled with Assassin’s Creed III. In Europe, as we hinted at previously, the bigger model comes with FIFA, with the 250GB apparently absent from the line-up: it’s the 500GB or the 12GB for us here in Europe – the 250GB is missing.

The 12GB flash one should be around £185, the bigger one £240. SCEE will also re-release loads of older games at crazy cheap prices (called PS3 Essentials) – with many of them being available for digital download too.

The European 500GB model launches on the 28th of September, as we previously stated – although the 12GB version isn’t out until the 12th of October. According to the press release we just got (about an hour after the reveal) it looks like you can upgrade the 12GB version with an official 250GB (or any of your own choosing) but in doing so you can’t access the 12GB flash partition.

Sadly, there’s no spec boost to the internals, there’s still no N class wireless networking for example. Furthermore, to have the PS3 in a vertical position you’ll need to buy a dedicated stand.

  1. Far from as keenly priced as they should be, Microsoft will be laughing this Christmas quarter.

Wanted one with flash storage & a big HDD but top loading is cheap & nasty rubbish & I don’t have room for top loading lid to open without buying a whole new media centre.

No wireless N is a joke in 2012, never mind keeping it for a few years

    • good point cc
top loading is a bit 80’s

that’s what I’m talking about about

  2. I’m confused. Why would anyone want a 12GB PS3 when you can’t even fit more than a couple of games on there? (Red Dead Redemption and inFamous 2, if you’re a SEN Plusser). Is it just to use it as a Blu-ray player and perhaps stick a few of your own photos and music tracks on there?

  3. If it turns out to be £185 for a 12 gig model, then it costs more than the 120 gig slim which is selling at only £170 at my local morrisons supermarket. It needs to be priced at £149 tops!

  4. RRPs, guys. Nobody apart from GAME (lol) will be selling it at full price.

  5. And as for why Sony are doing this. It’s obvious enough: http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2012/07/17/so-why-is-sony-making-a-16gb-ps3/

    • wish i’d read this again before posting……….

  6. So lately PS3s seem to have been selling a little cheaper as stock of the current Slim is sold through, meaning the new PS3 doesn’t look like as good a deal as it might.

People need to realise that the 12GB PS3 isn’t targeted at those who are primarily gamers (like all of you who read this site) it’s intended to be an intelligent streaming media box that also plays the odd game. You know, like the 4GB Xbox 360. Comprende?

What does bother me is the EU Blog’s mention of being able to “connect a 5 inch SATA internal hard drive with use of an official Mounting Bracket”. Assuming they really meant 2.5″ SATA HDD, what’s with the official mounting bracket? Guess the SSD must be in the HDD bay? Would tie in with not being able to use it once you add an HDD. Hope you get an official mounting bracket in the box…

    • There is precisely a 0.01% chance of getting the mounting bracket in the box.

  7. I’ve seen the slims selling for around £180 – 200. I don’t see the point in this console really, other than cost effective production for Sony.

  8. So if this is primarily a media streaming hub, surely they’re including the media remote in the box?

    • No, why?

    • Yes, a revised version that looks remarkably like a DS3. :-)

  9. This is a crazy price. Was hoping for way nearer £100. Would’ve picked one up if it was about £125.

  10. These prices are standard guideline RRP’s, and if you consider that a current PS3 320 slim has a standard gudeline RRP of £284.99 and a PS3 160GB slim @ £249.99 then you can see that it doesn’t really have any bearing on the price that some retailers will sell the new console at using their own RRP’s, it’s just set as a guideline.
The current 320GB slim can be bought for around £178 so you can see that the standard release RRP is just a guideline that only unscrupulous wanks will actually pursue and charge.
I think the prices will even out nicely for the new consoles and be a bargain buy when the dust settles and retailers have a handle on the pricing situation.

Just my 10 cents RRP :P

    • Nothing wrong with an unscrupulous wank in my book ;)

      • Can come in handy sometimes :O
