The free to play MOBA League of Legends announced itself as the most played video game in the world earlier this year, but if that wasn’t a big enough statistic for you Riot Games have released an infographic that puts into perspective how popular this game really is.
The statistics compare things such as peak concurrent players, daily active players and player base but the most impressive statistic has to be the hours played.
- Total cumulative hours played on Halo = 2+ billion since 2004.
- League of Legends average worldwide play hours = 1+ billion every month.
Riot Games are a large supporter of eSports with the League of Legends Season 2 World Championship Finals taking place this weekend, seeing the winning team take home a prize of $1 million from an overall prize pool of $5 million making it the largest prize pool in eSports history.
It would be interesting to see how the revenue for something like this stacks up against the money made on the high flyers in the UK game charts – which don’t include digital sales and don’t account for Free to Play or subscription models at all.
