And today it’s the turn of PSM3 magazine, Future’s print mag that will see its latest issue on the shelves shortly as the publisher moves to reduce the number of magazines and focus on its formidable online portfolio.
It’s going out with a bang, though, as GameFront.de reports the latest issue is primed with a big pile of PlayStation 4 rumours.
The first one being that it’s not going to be called the PlayStation 4, due to the number 4’s superstitious connotations in Japan. 4 is considered unlucky, and has an alternative pronunciation related to death.
Other aspects from the report say that the rumoured 4K resolution won’t be for games, just for movies. Good, if the next gen aims for 1080p at a decent frame rate that’ll be absolutely fine.
What else is in there? Sony will show demos at E3 next year, they’ll look like Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313 did on PC this year, and everyone will be rather excited. Except those that like used games, because the rumour is that games will be registered with a PSN account and it won’t be easy to play pre-owned titles. Remember this is just speculation, there’s no confirmation that any of this will actually happen.
Onwards? How about between 4GB and 8GB of RAM? No backwards compatibility with PS3 and PS2, oddly, although that’s likely to be covered by the Gaikai deal as we’ve said in the past. The mag points to Move being important (and possibly bundled) although that’s again just guesswork and most likely not going to end up the case.
The price? 400€-500€. We’ll see.
The PS4 – or whatever it’ll end up being called – is heavily rumoured to be coming next year. We’ve written plenty about it, including this discussion piece which picks up on most of the consolidated chat and technical guesswork.

I’d be pretty miffed if I couldn’t play my PSN collection of games, I think that’d be a tough pill to swallow.
Not having Backwards compatibilty could very easily be a financial decision based on re-sales as well as cost price. No doubt a few years into the life of the PS4 we will get Uncharted trilogy, Assassins Creed series, Dead Space and other games of such esteem (and by that point nostalgic feelings) re-released with improved graphics, sound and all that jazz. Lot of money to be made for everyone there
fattyuk
would your psn collection not work on your ps3 oO
quinkill
BC will make or break the “PS4” for me. I have a big collection of PS+ games and purchased PSN games, and I expect to be able to play them all on the next Sony Console. I can already hear the flamers “why would you expect it…? it’s a different console with different architecture!” Well I expect it because I get the same with my xbox account, my steam account and my apple account for iPhone and Mac Book Pro. Everyone’s doing it!
fattyuk
why would you need bc if your ps3 is working?? what’s the need to port your ps3 collection to a new console thus taking up memory on your new hdd??
I personally have a 500gb maxed out and another 500gb almost maxed out – sod wanting to port all that to a new cnsole!
The Lone Steven
Because not everyone has the room for two consoles and want to get the PS4 and retain their collection after they have traded in their PS3 to help pay for it?
fattyuk
How could you not have the room for another console lol
The Lone Steven
Quite easily as not everyone can afford to buy a bigger TV stand in order to house 2 consoles and refuse to put the PS3 away to gather dust.
PS3RULEZ890
The CELL processor is not that expensive anymore, so Sony can add it into the console anytime.
teflon
Yes, it is relatively cheap now, but at the time of the PS3’s launch, the PS2 chips were also cheap. It’s still an added cost, and when you want to sell millions and millions of consoles, it’s one that will seriously impact profits.
cc_star
When you multiply the cost price of a HDMI power cable or a USB cable (which is next to nothing at cost, surely? x 13m unit sales… it all adds to a bottom line that as far as Sony is concerned is already too high
supersmithnetwork
No backwards compatiable,
Can’t use pre-owned games,
No buy.
The PS4 will fail due to SCEE’s bad actions.
Nismo400R84
Speculation that is all they did the same when the ps3 came through and I see people going on with no pre owned no sale and stupid shite like that so please stop.
They can’t make it so you cant play or sell your pre owned games. Otherwise one the come under the spotlight with EU courts and no one wants to risk a fine two do you think gamestop or other big specialist retailers will stock the ps4 know that there will be no preowned market.
TSBonyman
If i can’t carry all my psn purchases with me onto PS4 i won’t be in any rush to upgrade.
LTG Davey
If it isn’t backwards compatible and doesn’t support pre-owned games I simply won’t bother. Same applies to all upcoming games consoles.

SONY:IF your reading this:
Hi, PS4 then, look lads n lasses, don’t try and claim it’ll do this, that or the other, like you did with PS2 (Emotion Eng.) and PS3 (Output 2X 1080P images at 60 FPS) as you just end up looking like twats, might as well claim it has built in surface-to-air yogurt maker, if your going to make stupid claims….
The 4X movie playback? nice, but of so little interest to myself, just don’t skimp on the RAM side, no matter what it costs in terms of manufacturing, as you’ll pay bigger price when your system’s version gets ripped apart by Lens Of Truth, Digital Foundary etc, your just providing fuel for Next Gen fanboys.
Some fantastic exclusive software would be lovely, basically my loves, look at where things went wrong even on PS2 side, let alone PSP, PS3+Vita and bounce back somewhat.
I want to see a Sony of the Playstation 1 type era, not the clusterf**k i’ve seen past few years.

THE VON BRAUN:
Sony ain’t reading this
lol

There won’t be any “4K” movies at home (actually 2K, but whatever). Not on BD, nor on TV. Even YouTube dropped support for it. Fact is, you need a screen the size of a digital theater to fully experience the resolution. And 8 GB in a home console is a pipedream. In other words: standard marketing BS.
Remember: All this has happened before, and all this will happen again.
fattyuk
4k = don’t own a 4k tv(yet)
backwards compatibility = have 2 ps3s and a ps2.
no pre owned = day 1 buyer of every game I want anyway.
day 1 buyer for me.
sorted :0)
