3DS Passes PS3 Lifetime Sales In Japan, As Wii U Shifts 300,000

[drop2]The Wii U launched in Japan last week, and the console – unlike here in Europe – did amazing numbers, shifting over 300,000 units.

In comparison, the PS3 sold 37,000 units and the Xbox 360 managed just 1,200 units.

In handhelds, the 3DS has already passed the PS3 in lifetime sales, this week reaching 8.8 million units with a week’s sales of 212,000 (the PS3 has sold 8.7 million).

That’s not bad considering the 3DS has only been available for just over 90 weeks against the PS3’s 317 weeks.

The Vita has maintained its 11,000 units number from last week, taking the total up to 1.07 million. It was outsold by the PSP by a factor of almost 2:1, the 3DS outselling it 20:1.

The biggest selling game was Yakuza 5 on the PSP with 363,717 units. New Super Mario Bros U was the biggest selling Wii U game, with 170,563 sales.

  1. Wow, those are some awesome figures :) Sort of expected given the release of MH3 HD

  2. Now if I lived in Japan I would happily re-buy a PSP purely because it is still getting ‘some’ games.

I’m not too surprised at Nintendo’s sales figures, their consoles are good all rounders. I must the WiiU looks pretty good. Perhaps in a year or two I might get one. maybe.

  3. I don’t quite get how the 3DS can be this popular, but good for Nintendo.

    • Really? I was really impressed with the 3DS.
Its backwards compatible with DS games (which includes a huge library of JRPGs), is very reasonably priced and has an impressive range of games.

      • I wanted one before launch, but there hasn’t been enough games of interest to me (currently there’s 4, so it is slowly growing) the 3D is the worst since red and blue glasses, and it seems to be a lesser device because of it. It drains the battery and makes it feel underpowered.

  4. Yakuza 5 is on the PSP?

  5. It’s a mad mad world we live in….especially when a controller can be bigger than the console!!! WHA HA HA

  6. Vita had higher numbers than the wiiu on launch. Soul Sacrifice should sell a lot of Vitas in the new year.

  7. Japan has become a real niche market rather than the rule. MH has an impact in Japan it doesn’t have anywhere else as do handhelds. The vita hasn’t really had the games for the Japanese market yet but the PSP keeps getting them and is getting good sales. Sony must be hoping that Japanese third party developers have something for the Vita soon. Japan is a really important market for handhelds but the games so far have really been for western markets.

The DS and PSP sales in Japan account for 1/5 to 1/4 of their worldwide sales compared to only 1/9 and 1/11 of the Wii and PS3 worldwide sales. The DS and PSP had sold three times as much as the Wii and PS3 in Japan a year ago. To see the 3DS pass the PS3 isn’t really a surprise. Last year the PS3 had only sold 6.3 million compared the DS selling 32.5 million
