The PlayStation Store begins its January Sale today but the bargains are few. Pick of the bunch has to be Hydrophobia Prophecy which is an absolute steal at 99p, it has its flaws but it is still an enjoyably damp romp. The Darkness II is also tempting at £11.99 with an additional 10% off for PS Plus subscribers.
Other than that there seems to be a lot of games that have already been given away as part of Plus such as Borderlands and Hell Yeah: Wrath of Dead Rabbit. Everything else you can probably pick up cheaper online, Transformers: Fall Of Cybertron is £18.99 on Play.com.

Spec Ops on sale at £19.99?
Steam has it on sale at £4.99 and that’s down from a standard price of £19.99
There’s some good deals at times on PSN, but really. C’mon.
This will matter even more when Sony are selling a new console and loads of 3rd parties are selling a variety of ‘Steam Boxes’ alongside Valve’s reference hardware.
Bilbo_bobbins
I’m seriously thinking that PS4 might not be for me in the next generation. They really seem to be a bit behind the times with everything on their store.
I’ve always had one, but next generation I’m kind of looking at leaving it and going for Steam or something similar.
avengerrr
Same here, I’m playing much more on Steam/PC than anything else at the moment.
PC gaming is cheaper it is just question of getting the hardware sorted out for me.
cc_star
The hardware ‘problem’ will be made easier through this year as Valve will obviously have some reference hardware out there, but they’re working with others at a variety of different price points too.
You won’t have to buy one of them – as I’m sure they’ll be a million & one guides online as to how to build your own… for less.
avengerrr
I don’t mind spending a fair amount of money for any PC even if I can get something along lines of a steambox for 400 as long as it has good tech and usability. With Steam and hardware to support the next few years of gaming it well worth the investment. But anything higher than 400 is ridiculous.

PC games are £15 cheaper sometimes more on day one has that changed anything no.
wonder if steam will get to do prices like that from publishers without MS/Sony getting something similar nextgen.
cc_star
What’s stopping Sony doing flash sales on the PSN now and what difference does next-gen make to that?
PC games may be much cheaper without the platform holders licence fee proving to essentially be a £10-£15 ‘tax’ on each purchase for gamers, but many are put off by the concept of PC gaming.
A dedicated platform would remove most of those barriers.
Those same publishers release their titles through Steam and still pay Valve the going rate for digital distribution rate of 30% and still massively undercut what happens on console.
Will be interesting to see what happens and how owners of all systems benefit from the competition.

Agreed, fella. This generation has me thinking, for the first time, about how much I can now enjoy on my PC. I’m happy with using a PS3 controller on the PC to play my games (like I did with Mafia II recently). I’m also thinking about pimping out the media PC so I start enjoying games on the TV (sofa, etc) as god intended. I don’t really want to sit at the PC for games other than FPS with a keyboard and mouse. If I pop a newer card in the PC then it means all of what I want will run perfectly well there. Steam sales are the most gorgeous thing ever in gaming and very much a part of my Christmas these days.

Wtf when did prototype come out? & this game is still nearly £20 the f*ck!! Is this prototype 1?
Tuffcub
YEah its PT1. I got PT2 for £13 from HMV last weekend.
Taylor Made
This is shocking, I know Sony don’t set 3rd party game prices but at least they should have some say.
Kennykazey
Those prices aren’t too bad for Scandinavia. I’m tempted by Saints Row, in late support of THQ you know.
avengerrr
Well the game was in a THQ bundle on Steam a couple of days ago. Over £200 worth of THQ gaming including SR3 for £19.99. I still think Sony need therapy with those prices.
KeRaSh
Or the THQ Humble Bundle for 6-7$ bundled with a few other games.
Kennykazey
But I didn’t want it for PC…. And the prices are at least half price of average retail here in Norway.
avengerrr
Crap Sale. Crap Sale. Crap Sale.
A couple of years ago the sales were good for PSP but this it utter rubbish. I sometimes wonder whether Sony are in the habit of ruining custom sometimes, I do wonder.
ron_mcphatty
Saints Row is a decent deal! And you have to admire Sony’s persistence in dropping the price of Hydrophobia Prophecy, I’m going to hang on until its 46p though as thats what I have left of the £20 voucher I won last year :)
blast71
I bought Hydrophobia when it was on sale for £1.99 and it was a bargain then, it’s not brilliant, but well worth what they’re charging for it. Good game thats worth a play
mrfodder
I think this can be summarised with “Meh!”.
Youles
The Darkness II or Mafia II aren’t too bad, although I suspect I can get them cheaper second hand, and save HDD space.
cc_star
Excuse the language but holy fucking shit.
Starman
Only SCEE would kick off a January sale 9 date late.
And yes that’s a pretty poor sale, with exception of borderlands GoTY, shame there’s no vita stuff on sale.
quinkill
It’s not the best Sale but it’s not too bad. Mafia II for anyone with plus is a steal IMO
