Rumour: Next Gen Sonic To Be Announced In February

Faster consoles, faster hedgehog?

Unsubstantiated next gen rumours: Yawn. Anonymous sources: Not to be trusted. But, Sonic? Yay!

With that in mind, I bring you a totally unconfirmed report that a new Sonic game will be announced next month and it’s going to be on a lot of platforms.

According to Sonic Stadium the game will ship on Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii U, Vita, 3DS and next-generation systems, “anything involving these new consoles is strictly confidential to people at the top of the company.” The 3DS version will be “similar in idea, but smaller in scope.”

The game is said to mix 2D and 3D sections over at least twenty stages, not including boss battles. Characters will be unlocked as the game progresses – as you might expect – and each stage will have multiple routes and exits.

The mysterious source says that “all in all, the games look very promising at this point” and it looks like the title will be released in the Autumn, conveniently just in time for those rumoured next gen consoles. Remember those?

February 2nd is apparently ‘Hedgehog Day’ (no, me neither) so there may be a teaser on that date.

Even if this is completely made up, it’s a fairly safe bet that Sonic will be appearing next gen and we have not had a well-loved, traditional hedgehog game for a while.

Sega is Awesome Sauce (too bad they don’t still make consoles.) You can never have too much Sonic.

Tried out the all stars demo yesterday and it was both surprising and entertaining. I Like how they are releasing on every gaming device in sight.

We did have Sonic 4: Episode II last year and Sonic Generations the year before, it’s not been that long since Sonic. Been a while since we had a well-loved one thoug.

I really think they need to retire Sonic now. It’s like trading on a known brand except rather than that brand bringing extra sales I think it works against them. I personally expect Sonic games to be bad, since so many have been, that I would give completely new and unknown game more of a chance than a Sonic title.

So is this a rehash of what’s been seen before or something new and innovative for the next gen consoles?

Presumably something new and innovative. They just did a rehash for Genrations because it was celebrating Sonic’s 20th anniversary and for Sonic 4 because it was an attempt to create a throwback of the old Sonic games, or their version of New Super Mario Bros.

Ever heard of Sonic 4? Or Sonic Generations? Or Sonic Colors? Those were the best [Sonic] games I’ve played in a very long time.

I think there should be a seperate section for all these next gen rumours. I’m starting to think its just a few people emailing websites hoping they’ll run it.
