Microsoft Studios has announced that Age Of Empires II is getting an HD makeover and will be releasing on Steam on April 9th. It is being developed by Hidden Path Entertainment and will include the expansion pack The Conquerers. There will also be online multiplayer available, which will allow players to choose from one of the 18 civilisations in the game.
Personally I’m quite happy about this news because the original Age Of Empires II was the first RTS game I played obsessively. Sure the likes of Civilization, Total War, and Command & Conquer have all entered my RTS catalogue, but for me nothing quite beat the magic of AoE II.
There are also a few screenshots of the game.

Someone please hand me the tissue paper. Some of the best news I’ve heard in a long time.
me too! Loved this game and will be getting it
i will also get it! awesome news!!
Would be even nicer to see an announcement of AOE4 in the near future =)
Yes! this is great news. I’m so glad. AoEII is one of the favourite RTS ever.
All I need now is AOM on Steam and I can die a happy man!
I loved this game when it first came out. I was addicted to it. I definitely think people should buy this over SimCity, again its on Steam too.
Wood please! wwwwwwww wood please
MONK! I NEED A MONK!
WENCH! I NEED A WENCH! What?
Do Microsoft usually distribute through Steam? I’d just assumed they’d go down the route of trying to sell directly.
They needed someone to host their multiplayer since *can’t remember the name* no longer exists.
I remember playing this as a kid, good times :). anyone remember an RTS game demo that came with this called Urban Assault ? would love if a company done a reboot of that game.
there it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BC9urctloz4
game was beasty
I was really excited when I heard this news yesterday, AoE II is one of my favourite RTS’s along side Rome Total War. Does anyone know how much it will cost? I’ve still got AoE II installed on my PC so it will have to be fairly cheap to warrant me buying it again.
Its already pre-orderable on Steam, its like around £13.49
£9.99 would have had me sold! *Awaits Steam sale*
I’d rather have it in 3D like AoE3, but this is really great news. I hope the factions look more different, some of them felt quite samey.
