David Hayter Wasn’t Approached For Metal Gear Solid 5

Last week Hideo Kojima ended the teasing and announced the existence of Metal Gear Solid V with an impressive tech demo, and a rather insane trailer which included a fire whale.

However in the build up to and following the announcement there were rumours around that stated David Hayter, the voice of Solid Snake, would not be returning to the series. Well, that looks to be the case, as the following Tweet points out:

He did confirm this in a follow-up, however, since going back to the Twitter conversation I can’t actually find the “Nope” response from Hayter, though follow up tweets do have Hayter asking what is next for him.

In regards to MGSV itself, Hideo has stated in interviews that the game represents a new direction for the series, which is why Hayter has not been given a role in this game.

But, since this is Metal Gear Solid and Kojima we’re talking about, there could be another twist in the tale down the road.

  1. I actually hope they don’t bring Snake back. They gave him the perfect ending in 4 – time to move on with another character.

  2. Snake? Snake?! Noooooo!

  3. Man, the reason I fell in love with MGS was snake voice, it suits him, I understand why big boss was voiced by someone else in MGS4 cause it would be weird snake & big boss sounding the sane at the very same time.

But in MGS3 big boss was David hayter aswell as Peace walker so they best bring hayter back!

  4. Yet in 2012 he was voice acting with another Metal Gear Solid voice actor which still leaves a little bit of doubt in my mind, but all the other evidence does look like he wont be in this one.

  5. David? David!? DAAAAAVVVVVVVVIIIIIIIDDDDDDD!

You can’t have Snake or a young to middle aged Big Boss without Hayter. He is a part of the franchise as much as Kojima is. I understand that Big Boss will have to be voiced by Doyle due to him voicing him in MGS4 but surely Kojima could have had Hayter do the Ground Zeroes part then Doyle for the rest of the game due to the 9 year coma and i think Big Boss is in his 50s/60s during MGS5. I’m hoping this is part of Kojima’s marketing and Hayter is actually coming back to do Big Boss, even if it’s just for Ground Zeroes as it feels wrong for Hayter to not get a decent send off. :(

    • That would have been a good way of writing Hayter out of the series, the coma does seem to be a good reason for a bit of a character flip. It’s a shame Hayters departure from the role has made the news in this negative manner, it could have been handled better.

  6. Ah man David Hayter :(. I hope this is a lie/marketing scheme. This makes me quite sad.

  7. I’m not a hardcore fan of the series (though I did enjoy 4). but to those who are disappointed; remember there was a lot of outcry and negative feedback when it seemed David Bateson would no longer be voicing Agent 47 in Hitman:Absolution and then IO Interactive basically did a U-Turn. The official line is “that his absence made them realise they wanted him.” but I bet fan feedback played a huge part.

My point is, speak up! Maybe enough voices can make a difference.

  8. Not liking where all this seems to be headed….

1st, Ubisoft has Sam Fisher voiced by someone other than Michael Ironside for Splinter Cell, now this?, gutted!.

Oh and least i forgot the fiasco over the Silent Hill HD collection, originally did’nt plan to have voice actors from original games, finally did thank goodness.

  9. Sad to see him go indeed but it’s impossible to argue he didn’t have an insanely good run. IMO he really went from strength to strength to finish on a high note, perhaps it is a good time for this change?
