What We Played #99: BioShock Infinite, Terraria, Tomb Raider

What We Played

I can’t bring myself to do it. I had a couple of spare hours and the opportunity to continue my adventure in Columbia but after all the similarities to the original I encountered in the first couple of hours of playing it, I just couldn’t bring myself to pop the Bioshock Infinite Blu-ray back into my PS3.

Maybe one day. There was of course only one thing to do instead: play Mass Effect 3 online.  I’ve yet to start the Citadel DLC, as whenever I fire up my PS Plus-provided digital copy of the game I head straight for the brilliant multiplayer action, even if it’s only to try and solo a new map. If you’re playing solo in multiplayer is it really multiplayer?

Like myself and Bioshock Infinite, Kris also tried to play a game and didn’t quite make it. Different game and reason though. The game was Driver: San Francisco and the reason was having a quick go of Just Cause 2 while Driver downloaded. A quick go that lasted until about 2AM the following morning.

Compounding that, a town-skipping friend has borrowed what he claims to be his only PS3 charge cable and his prolonged JC2 session has left his DS3 battery kaput.  I can’t believe anybody these days only has one USB cable, they’re a permanent trip hazard ’round here whether you want mini or micro connectors on them, but Kris is sticking to his story [It’s depressingly true – Kris].

Spotting a cheap looking Lara Croft hanging out on a dimly lit corner of the PSN Store, Dan couldn’t resist the urge to drop a score to pick her up.  He’s “not massively impressed” with Tomb Raider so far though.  “It seems to be walk ten paces, cutscene, irritating QTE, rinse, repeat.”

Peter meanwhile has managed to finish Bioshock Infinite:

I think I said last week that I loved the world they’d created but wasn’t too keen on the game parts through which you experienced that world. It kind of falls apart a little bit later with a terrible difficulty spike and some laborious sections that seem to simply be there to prolong things but the ending was certainly worth experiencing.

Though it was not as mind-blowing as some seemed to think – I thought it was kind of obvious from about a third of the way into the game – there are some very smart allusions that go some way to excusing the poor gameplay design earlier in the game.

He’s certainly not helping with my struggle to return to Columbia. He also teases that if you’re about on Tuesday then he’ll be able to tell you about Guacamelee but I failed to threaten or cajole him into giving us any early hints.

Aran has been playing Terraria for our review and just in case WWP beats it onto TSA’ s front page [It didn’t – Kris] he summarises it as “a fun and engaging experience” where you’ll easily “lose hours exploring its world” which is essentially like “2D Minecraft with RPG mechanics”.

After 20 hours of Assassin’s Creed 3 he reckons he’s about halfway through the story, and while Connor “may not be the most interesting character” the game’s world and all the hunting, myth debunking and sailing in the “fun side quests” are keeping him ably entertained.

Last up this week is Tuffcub with a bunch of tiny reviews of his week’s gaming:

  • Bioshock Infinite – Played, finished, started well but went wonk at the end. 8/10
  • The Walking Dead – Played, finished, just to get my second platinum. Episode three and four are much better than the rest. 4/10
  • Killzone 3 – 2,800 XP in one mortar strike. YES! 11/10
  • Need For Speed: Most Wanted – Still enjoying this on PS Vita. 9/10
  • Under Defeat HD – Picked this up for a tenner, pleasingly simple bullet hell shoot’em’up. 7/10
  • F1 Race Stars – Played against the nephews over Easter. Shite single player but fun multiplayer. 6/10

I really must make an effort to go back to The Walking Dead myself, I’ve still only played the first episode!

Anyway, rather than list all the games I’ve still to finish (as it would take way too long) I should probably just invite you to let us know what you’ve played this week…

  1. A nice healthy diet of Persona 4 Golden and Counter-Strike (on PC) to start the week but now that I have got Tomb Raider I am happy just to play that for a while. Really pleased with how it has been rebooted so far.

  2. Finished bioshock infinite (1 handed thank you very much). Bought the season pass for that & Bordelands 2. So been chasing some pirate booty & loving it.

  3. I’ve not really played much this week. I’ve played a bit of SD and Bioshock Infinite. I just didn’t feel like gaming that often this week. :o

Caught parts of LOTR:TTT and ROFTK. Excellent films and may watch the trilogy over the weekend. I was tempted to pick up ME trilogy the other day as it’s £25 but decided against it as i can see EA rereleasing it with all of the DLC for ME3.

  4. Played a lot more Phantasy Star Online 2… That’s about it… :D

  5. Mostly played DOA5, collecting titles to unlock Alpha 152 (which I have now done). Also played through and completed Voodoo Chronicles.
In between those (and usually whilst watching/listening to the telly) I’ve been doing a few levels of EDF on Vita and Luigi’s Mansion 2 on 3DS.

  6. Still playing Ace Combat Assault Horizon in both single player (mainly getting A ranks in free mission) and multi.

Also, after the recent MGS5 trailers I started playing MGS4, as I havent played it with the trophies patch. Brilliant game.

  7. Mostly Bioshock infinite this week. Finished my first run through on hard which I found extremely fun and bizarre as you’d expect. From the first half I wasn’t completely drawn into in thinking it was a touch too tame, the second half blew me away. Not as obviously disturbing as the original Bioshock but definitely dark and surreal in a more omminous undertone kind of way.

Elsewhere I have nearly finished all the Dead Space 3 collectables Just 2 more to get then its onto the DLC with Youles when he finishes his run through with MJB. I also finally finished my multiplayer grind to level 30 on Dort Showdown. I couldn’t face doing it any long so I just rubber banded the controller and left it on all day and night. Just a bit of mopping up left on the single player then it should be the plat for me which I shall hopefully do at work tomorrow.

  8. Guild Wars 2, it’s my first MMO (believe it or not) and I’m hooked so far which is the reason I avoided MMOs in the first place. I’m playing with my engineer everyday, any chance I get. I have so many amazing games waiting on the side, it’s shameful: xcom, portal 2 and ni no kuni still far from being finished, heavy rain and unfinished swan untouched, okami hd waiting for a download, civ v and most importantly fallout: nv which I’m also very much in love with. I feel spoiled and dirty.

  9. Been playing Guild Wars 2, Warriors Orochi 3, Ni No Kuni, BioShock Infinite, Tomb Raider, Torchlight 2, Chivalry Medieval Warfare (Fun game!), Archeblade and Tera… so many games, so little time.

  10. I played a whole raft of different games which I’ll attempt to sum up with single words. Or no more than ten. Maybe.

    Tomb Raider. Simply wonderful.
FIFA 13. Great game, myriad of things to do, broken online.
Ni No Kuni. Charming beyond words but missing a certain something.
    Dead Space 3. Wank.
Bioshock Infinite. Hugely impressive first hour. Wow.
MW3. The Model shotgun makes it worth a few hours occasionally.
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask. Business as usual but not as good as his earlier offerings.
Final Fantasy Theatrhythm. Relaxing even in its hectic moments.
Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure. Pure unadulterated fun. Quite simply a joy to play.
