What We Played #106: Sleeping Dogs, Demon’s Souls and Velocity Ultra

What We Played

Something’s got Tuffcub typing in capitals. It could have been last week’s teddy bear mascot quip or his trying to enjoy playing Sleeping Dogs which he gave another try after you were all nice about it in the WeView. It was probably the latter.

He “got bored very quickly,” which likely did not help when the game forced him to “walk (not run) through a street market” all in the aid of developing the plot by letting “Johnny Exposition explain things”. “I DON’T CARE, let me play the frickin’ game” was the resultant outburst.

Things don’t seem to have got any better once he was past that market. “Then it decided to teach me how to press buttons,” the literal, not the figurative ones, “and just to make sure, I had to press the right buttons THREE TIMES!”

He ended his little Sleeping Dogs tirade with a plea to developers: “PLEASE MAKE TUTORIALS SKIPPABLE.” I have to say that I find it hard to disagree.

He soothed his raging mind with a bit of Killzone 3, Need For Speed Most Wanted on his PS Vita and lots of Velocity Ultra. Talking of Velocity Ultra, he would like you to buy the soundtrack for some reason.

Aran’s another staffer playing Futurlab’s PS Vita update of their minis title, Velocity. He’s enjoying the game’s “fast paced action” and the fact that while challenging it’s yet to become frustrating. Ultra’s doing a pretty good job of keeping the “decent side-scrolling shoot’em up” Sine Mora off his PS Vita’s screen, with it only getting the odd look in.

After last week’s less than successful exploits he’s decided to cut his losses and start a new game of XCOM Enemy Unknown, something most people I know who’ve played the game do so about 12 hours in owing to a blip in the difficulty curve. More research investment and caution is his revised plan.

Demon's Souls

Celebrating the end of his exams, DanToo has dived back into Demon’s Souls with a new save. “It’s still as tough as ever” he says, though having completed it “dozens of times before” he has some idea of what to expect.

He’s got to the point where death is often just “funny to watch,” and the fact that the servers are still up was a pleasant surprise as he’d thought them long gone. The “lovely” Velocity Ultra which is “a joy to play” has seen also some play, as has BioShock in both the original and Infinite incarnations, around which he has squeezed some F1 2012 racing.

Peter was about to tell me about Remember Me but only just managed to get the title out before recalling the embargo doesn’t expire until a week tomorrow. Other than that he’s been passing time with Passing Time, the PlayStation Mobile game, on his PS Vita.  It’s an “attempt to make a one-touch football game” that’s all touch-based and it doesn’t quite work:

Your players move by themselves, mostly (you can drag to intercept when you don’t have the ball) and you tap on them to pass. The matches can be quite tricky and a little bit fiddly but it’s a clever enough concept and it’s executed well.

I haven’t had a lot of time with it and I get the impression that, once I am used to the controls and get over the fact that I want to control my players myself, it could get to be quite fun.

Hiding Snake-like under an otherwise empty, stationary box is where we Dom. Having moved, mostly unpacked and got relatively settled in, all is still not right with his world.  “I still have no Internet,” he complains, a state of affairs which has given him plenty of time to consider writing about “society’s reliance on the web”.

He’s playing more Talisman HD Prologue on his phone, which “just really wants to make [him] play Games Workshop games,” and he’s dabbled with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate which he observes is still “er… ultimate.” He also shares with us that Microsoft’s fumbled Xbox One reveal has cemented his pre-order. For a PlayStation 4 that is.

As for me, I’ve been playing Project Planning all week which I’m giving a “not much fun” rating but the hours invested in it do at least contribute towards my ‘paying the bills’ achievement, so I’ve stuck with it for now.

Hope you’ve played some more game-like activities?

  1. This week I’ve played… urrrm, actually, I don’t think I’ve played anything!
Was busy Monday night, Tuesday was the Xbox reveal and since then my mate and I have been putting together an XboxOne blog.
Picking up my two copies of RE Revelations this evening so will no doubt start that with the Mrs this weekend :-)

  2. After getting my BioShock Infinite platinum last Sunday I’ve since played chapters 1-11 on Dead Space 3 (in Classic Mode)….it’s my first solo playthrough so it’s been rather enjoyable, and I’ve used it to mop up a few trophies too.

On Vita I’ve only played some FIFA 13 online Ranked games, currently sitting at about 65 of 100 for the trophy.

Also been playing New Star Soccer on iOS, and it looks like I may finally win the Premiership this season, I have a 9-point lead with about 10 games to go.

I’ve also ordered a few games this week – The Darkness I & II, and preordered Tearaway, Journey The Collectors Edition and Killzone Mercenaries.

  3. Continued my epic adventure with Mass Effect 3. Clocked in about 20 hours this week, which is pretty impressive. Very much enjoying it, although it appears I have caught the infamous ‘Hanar Diplomat’ bug and therefore will now have an un-completable mission. Very annoying for someone with mild OCD tendencies.

  4. Mostly Tomb Raider for me this week. Even though the usual open world model is mostly gone, I still found it hugely enjoyable. I even forgave the short trip from “oh no I killed a deer” to ripping out throats with an arrow, on the multi-player however, I set my sights low and was still disappointed.
Also bought the DLC for Thomas Was Alone and hope there is more coming, love that little game.

  5. OMG…agreeing with Tuffcub again! All game makers assume you have never played a game before. Why they can’t have a “press SELECT if you want to learn what all the buttons do” option is beyond me. I guess they’ll come out with some cobblerinos about breaking the flow of the narrative…utter bushwhackery!

Anyway, I’ve been playing the new maps on Black Ops II…love what they’ve done with the “new” Studio” map! Also a bit of Hitman Absolution (ok game) and Thomas Was Alone (good little puzzler) even though (SPOILER ALERT) he isn’t alone for very long.

  6. Some soul sacrifice all week, the platinum is mine, it’s 6 trophies away. Haven’t played anything else tbh

    • Platinum Soul Sacrifice BOOM, I’m on a roll

  7. I played a game in a secret TSA-meet with 3 other players, involving skateboarding. and I am not supposed to talk about it. It has few rules:

1- do not talk about the secret meet
2- Do NOT talk about the secret meet!
3- DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE SECRET THPS TSA-MEET ON THURSDAY EVENINGS!

  8. I finished Blood Dragon this week, although for most of it it’s been a combination of exam revision and Justified, Warehouse 13 and Trans-Siberian on Netflix.

  9. Completed Dragon’s Dogma. The plot is good. It’s better then average and is done well. I wouldn’t say it’s excellent but it is good. It’s in between average and excellent. Killed Grigori on my first attempt and that is how a final boss fight should be done. Skyrim should be ashamed. Grigori is a dragon and got what could be one of the best final boss fights i’ve every played. Oh and his voice actor is amazing. In fact, i would even say he is the best character in the game. Won’t say more about it as it will be spoilers. Started a new playthrough as a Mage. What i’m going to do is max out the Mage vocation first then move to Sorcerer. Whilst the melee combat is excellent, i’m going to see how good it is to play as a mage. I know for a fact that the Sorcerer uses powerful spells that are mostly combat related whilst the mage is more of a support role. I think.

Going to have my Main Pawn be a mage as well as it’s easier to have your MP be the same class due to the AI being influnced by your actions. For example, if you tend to use ranged combat, the MP will used ranged combat as well. This time, i’m going to equip helmets instead of circlets and do every side quest or most sidequests. Will do Dark Arisen when i’m level 45 or 50 as that is designed to kick your arse if you are not prepared and are low level. Oh and more powerful monsters can turn a challenging battle into a “YOU HAVE GOT TO BE FECKIGN KIDDING ME!” battle. Such as a BFW(Big Fucking Wolf, copyright Steven 2013) joining the fight against a Cockatrice. Got my arse kicked twice before i got lucky. Word of advice, don’t take on two cockatrices at the same timee unless you know you can handle it. I learnt that the hard way because of one thing. Petrifaction. The Cockatrice uses this attack and the curatives for it are rare. Once you are petrified, you are dead. But other enemies can get caught in it. Defeated the Evil Eye. Was easy as a Magic Archer. Would advise using this class and try to avoid cutting off all the tenticales as it will renegenarate them. Defeated the Hydra and how the bloody hell did he get someone to post that quest on the notice board in Cassassdis? Oh and in Dark Arisen, you fight Death itself. I’m not kidding, you take on freaking Death. But if he comes, it is advisable to run away as he can kill in one hit.

On this new playthrough, i’m going to ensure that i always combine stuff and only send rare items that i can’t combine yet to storage as i want to avoid having a lot of crap in storage. Only quest items and certain peices of armour/weapons will go into storage.

DD:DA is like Demon Souls but more forgiving. Once you discover a way to kill the monsters, it’s easy. For example, the Cyclops will give you trouble at first but if you are a strider and have Hundred Kisses, climb onto it, unleash it on it’s head. If it has a helmet, climb onto it’s head and move before it tries to grab you as it will remove it. Anyway, i will create a thread as this is probably the same size as the article.

    • “Word of advice, don’t take on two cockatrices at the same timee unless you know you can handle it.”

      ….is what your mum said.

  10. I’m enjoying Metro Last Light and some Poker Night 2 but this week has kept me busy reading all the commentary and reaction to the xbox one reveal around the web.
