Ubisoft Racer The Crew Unveiled For PS4, Xbox One

Ubisoft kicked of their next-generation segment with an official unveiling of The Crew, a game which was leaked a little while back. A bold step into the rather crowded world of racing games.

The angle here is rather similar to Drive Club, that people can drive online as part of a team, and work together. But this is mixed in with an open world which spans the USA, as you work together to infiltrate a criminal organisation and take over the country one city at a time.

There will be plenty of cars to pick from, with boat loads of customisation in the trailer, and shown briefly in game. You can pick individual parts and customise from top to bottom, both on your console, and as a running theme this coming generation, on tablets.

You’ll want to pick the right vehicle for the task. One brief demo saw a road car racing up a twisty mountain road, going against an off roader which could just cut across the road. Each challenge will naturally earn you experience and money to buy more parts as progress.

This all comes together in the co-op missions with your crew. Tasked with taking down a heavily armoured vehicle, you’ll want a car which you can handle anything. With an open world playground, that could see you driving down semi-populated beaches, ducking between oncoming traffic.

It’s hard to describe it in terms of other games. There certainly feels like there are influences from all sorts of games, which makes this quite an intriguing blend which could stand apart from other racing titles.

  1. This actually sounds quite exciting. And a new IP!

  2. I thought the new Need for Speed looked good, but this just blew it out the water. The world looked massive, the racing looked great and the co-op looked great fun.

  3. I like the sound of this but, like you say, it’s a rather crowded genre but looking forward to finding out more.

  4. Maybe it’s me, but did anyone else think this looked more this gen rather than next?

    • Same hear, thought it might be (partly) down to watching it in a lower resolution.
Looks to be a mix of Fuel, Driver & Burnout Paradise.

  5. It’s like Payday but in cars! :D

  6. I don’t like the speed of the cars.. Nitrus doesn’t seem to do much but add a graphic at the back of the car but that’s something that I’ll probably only know if I try the game. Loved the expanse of the game but always online is a bit meh to me still. Next-gen is going to kill off offline play.

    • Pretty sure you can play it offline.

  7. Smugglers Run meets Need for Speed?

    • Much better than the rubbish Mike was saying! ;)

  8. It’s like Fuel (that open world racer), Motorstorm and Need for Speed turned into one giant Frankenstein monster. Looks fucking awesome though :P

  9. Ubisoft showing EA how it’s done! Take my money goddammit!

  10. Man, that video was ace. This is definitely one to watch for next gen. :)
