UK Games Charts: 19/08/13 - PayDay Knocks Minecraft Down A Notch

A new number one!

I didn’t even really mean for that pun in the title to happen, it just did. Yes, it seems that Minecraft has been blocked from the top spot by heist shooter PayDay 2, which is absolutely brilliant news; it’s great to see two once-indie developers hit the big time with two fantastic games.

Black Ops II has had a bit of a resurgence, too, jumping up to third, with FIFA in fourth, which is followed by the ever-present Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Sony’s incredible The Last of Us at fifth and sixth respectively.

It’s a familiar tale in the rest of the top 20, with LEGO games, Skyrim, GTA, Assassin’s Creed, Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3 and all the other franchises we’re now used to see in the charts.

  1. PAYDAY 2 – 505 GAMES
  2. MINECRAFT: XBOX 360 EDITION – MICROSOFT
  3. CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS II – ACTIVISION BLIZZARD
  4. FIFA 13 – ELECTRONIC ARTS
  5. ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW LEAF – NINTENDO
  6. THE LAST OF US – SONY COMPUTER ENT.
  7. THE SMURFS 2 – UBISOFT
  8. LEGO BATMAN 2: DC SUPER HEROES – WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE
  9. TOMB RAIDER – SQUARE ENIX EUROPE
  10. GRAND THEFT AUTO IV – TAKE 2
  11. ASSASSIN’S CREED III – UBISOFT
  12. THE ELDER SCROLLS V: SKYRIM – LEGENDARY – BETHESDA SOFTWORKS
  13. NEED FOR SPEED MOST WANTED – ELECTRONIC ARTS
  14. LEGO THE LORD OF THE RINGS – WARNER BROS. INTERACTIVE
  15. FAR CRY 3 – UBISOFT
  16. MAX PAYNE 3 – TAKE 2
  17. GRAND THEFT AUTO EPISODES – LIBERTY CITY – TAKE 2
  18. BATTLEFIELD 3 – ELECTRONIC ARTS
  19. BIOSHOCK INFINITE – TAKE 2
  20. RED DEAD REDEMPTION: GOTY – TAKE 2

What you’ll find is that COD’s sales are so truly massive that it’s own trickle of sales, months after a title has appeared, still eclipses most other titles in their formative weeks.

When we’ve had articles on here about games like Tomb Raider not hitting their target, it seems incredible and unfathomable. However, when you look at the likes of Black Ops selling over twenty million copies across the major platforms, it’s easy to see that the tale end of their revenue stream is very impressive. It’s the reason why we don’t see them discounted much in the likes of Steam’s sales.

I know, who is still buying COD?!?! Are people that sad that they need to rebuy COD so they can “practice” the art of pushing two buttons for preparation for the next COD which will play exactly the same as every other COD since 2007.
