Rockstar Discuss Next-Gen Plans For GTA

And no return to London either.

The Guardian have spoken to Rockstar and asked them if they were interested in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, specifically if they had thought “Oh wow, what will GTA 6 look like on a PS4?”

“Of course we’re interested,” said Rockstar’s Dan Houser, “But no, not in terms of GTA, because we’re always working on the current game.”

“We look at the tech at a more practical level: what will be ready for which game that we’re working on further down the line. We don’t have another GTA in development, we don’t work on three of these games at a time. That would be phenomenally depressing. So, in terms of GTA, no.”

This is actually quite a tricky statement to try and interpret, and though Tuffcub (who found and wrote this post initially) disagrees with myself and Blair, I think it’s really quite non-commital. It states that there is no other GTA game in development, so no GTA 6 right now, but is a long way from ruling out a next generation of GTA V. In fact, Houser acknowledges that they’ve seen the PS4 and Xbox One.

“We get pitched by the hardware manufacturers on what they’re planning to do and our tech guys come up with ideas on how that could be used. Does this influence design decisions? Of course. But we’re not sat there fantasising about 10 years down the line. We’re so busy with what we’re doing right now.”

Houser did rule out any return to London for the GTA series, “My own personal feeling is that GTA is America. With this game, I think, we’re very happy with the location. It let us do something iconic.”

What do you think it sounds like Houser is saying?

Very non committal as I’d expect but I don’t believe they haven’t got a plan?

Dan Dawkins of PSM3 has always said that he reckons it’ll come to ps4 and most of his predictions have been right, plus with R* saying they’re gonna make a billion $ from gta5, it’s gotta come to next gen….?

Considering they made $800 million in a day they’ll smash that target by Christmas with or without the next gen.

Apart from GTA Online, i don’t care if GTA V comes to PS4. It’s great on PS3.

The only thing that the PS4 could provide is better draw distane and more players online, and of course all the PS4s social features.

If you want the game, get it now. It will hold its value for a while, and you’ll get plenty of advance warning that it’s coming to PS4/X1, as and when R* announce their plans.

Even if GTA V didn’t turn up on PC or Next Gen, I would expect GTA Online to do so. They’ve talked about ongoing support for that which would be pretty limited for current gen machines.

Going by the article here, it feels easy to interpret as he’s been careful with his wording.

    1. They’re not currently working on a new GTA for the next gen (which doesn’t mean anything but that. I’m sure we’ll see a GTA VI in four years time or so).
    2. They’re working on the current game (but doesn’t mention platforms) so we’ll probably see a PC release in four to six months and then a next gen version.

It makes me VERY happy to know they actually have a potential break from GTA because some staff would go utterly mental working on the same franchise forever. Then again, there are 5 to 6 Rockstar studios working on games so I guess folk could shift across to another studio if they completely burn out from GTA.

Agree. They possibly don’t have ‘another GTA’ in development, but very likely the same for different platforms, including PS4. But I wouldn’t tell anyone either, if I were them, of course. So why keep people bugging them with stupid questions, no one would give an answer to..?

When they say ‘we don’t work on three of these games at a time’, does that mean they do work in two? And if GTA V for PS3 and XBox 360 was one of the two…? I hope I’m not being stupid but to me that says they’ve been working on the next gen version as well.

He could be talking that 1st game GTAV- all platforms, and 2nd game GTAV DLC- all platforms. And the 3rd would be GTAVI nex-gen exclusive, which they haven’t started. considering the GTA IV DLC of TBoGT and how they had to change the engine, the GTAV DLC could be quite huge and complicated. Although all platforms might include nex-gen, I think most of his words are directed at not starting on GTAVI until GTAV is done instead of releasing GTAV on nex-gen.
He made a similar comment about not starting GTAV until GTAIV was done back when GTAIV launched

I don’t think GTA would work outside an “American” location. Let’s be honest here GTA London is the lest popular in the series (maybe not in the UK, but everywhere else) and were talking consoles here so Chinatown Wars doesn’t count. I think when people talk about GTA, they’re talking home consoles and GTA3 or higher, since 3 is when the craze started and really defined the GTA experience. So I think he’s right, outside of “American” culture you lose the satire element that makes GTA entertaining instead of disturbingly disturbing. Maybe if the organized crime culture of London, Moscow, Hong Kong, ect, was more popular or understood you could successfully satire those cultures too, but otherwise I think alot of the humor would get lost in translation and you’d be left with just another open world clone that left you doing really horrible things to advance a equally horrible story. I don’t think they’d allow GTA on consoles if it wasn’t social commentary mocking real life telling us how horrible human beings we are.
