Dead Rising 3 Runs At 720P 30FPS

It has been confirmed that Xbox One launch title Dead Rising 3 runs at 720P and only 30 frames per second.

Eurogamer spoke to Josh Bridge, Executive Producer at Capcom Vancouver and he announced “we’re a 720p game locked at 30fps”.

“When we first started there was no platform, it was PC and we were just targeting next-gen, and 1080, even before then we thought it’d be prohibitive to even consider that, because essentially you have to do everything twice, which is just massive when you think of it,” he added.

“It’s more important that the end image looks awesome – look at how much stuff is on screen, that’s always been a Dead Rising sort of brand. That still looks really good, and that’s been our goal. I hope it shows – just look at how much insane stuff is going on screen.”

Kinect Sports Rivals has been confirmed to run at 1080p/30fps, Ryse: Son of Rome at 900p/30fps whilst Forza Motorsport 5 manages that elusive 1080p/60fps.

  1. Not surprising given how packed the screen gets. And am I the only one getting bored by these endless “1080/720 60/30fps stories?

    • I know. And then something like Hotline Miami comes out and everyone says how brilliant it looks!

  2. Personally this doesn’t bother me too much. I think, at least for an sp action game, 30fps is good enough and I’ve been used to 720p for so long now I don’t think it will bother me. Maybe once I have played a lot of 1080p games on next-gen I will notice the difference, but for a launch game I don’t think its a big deal.

  3. I watched some gameplay last night and i don’t think it will matter too much about the fps/res – the game looks like great fun. I won’t be picking up an XB1 nor did i enjoy the previous DR games but the gameplay seems much more fluid and with an impressive numbers of zombies on screen at once.

  4. @starman:

Nope, not just you, getting bored by all these OMG!!! it’s only 720P/30FPS type stories that keep cropping up.

‘Odd’ i’ve yet to see a: ‘OMG!!!! It’s like, the same sh*t you all bought this generation, but like in a higher resolution this time, plus more sh*t onscreen and some lighting effects they could’nt do on current generation and have you guys seen just how much content they expect you to pay extra for via DLC?’ headline…or two.

Did the media jump on the bandwagon this much over PS3/360 game annoucements? or have i just blocked that from my mind?

Here’s the thing:Not every game has to be in 1080P/60 FPS right?, you know, it’s ok for say a mech game to convey a feeling of a lumbering brute, rather than a F1 racing car, or a FPS to have focus put on atmosphere and ideas never really exploited before or, god forbid we return to an era where survival horror games were actually bloody scary and developers were’nt instead thinking: ‘You know what’d be fantastic? having like real Playboy models used for motion capture for our nurses and whilst we’re at it, lets really up the gore n guns, throw in some MP modes’.

My pet concern is, that all the various sites are doing, is starting to put the fear of god into developers, who’ll start to think, ohhh fecking’ell, if we don’t get the damn thing running at 1080P/60 FPS, we’ll get slaughtered out there way before the game even hit’s retail, shit, what can we cut to achive that benchmark figure?.

60 FPS i’d look for in a racer a la Burnout, 1080P, i’m really not that fussed about, as to me..it’s just nicer…not groundbreaking leap from 2D-to-3D or OMG, it really does look like the arcade game, it’s just a ‘that’s nice dear….’ improvement.

Why don’t sites go whole hog and admit that sometimes, gamers really should be careful what they wish for-So many seemed to be screaming that they wanted the Next Gen and they wanted it now god damn it and it had’nt better cost more than £300 or like, M$ and $ony could get f**ked….

well here it is my loves and it’s within your price range and yes, it’s delivering ‘better’ graphics like you asked for, so why so sad? what did you honestly expect? Sony+MS to say they were quite happy to take massive losses on each unit sold, just so the ‘graphics tarts’ could feel smug and then within 12 months the PC elite started mocking the super consoles as being dated and how their gaming rig made Skynet look pathetic.

Should we really ‘wish’ a return to the PS2/DC type arms race of hyberbolic claims of performance claims that bore no realation to actual in-game performance?.

All i know is, no matter what the resolution, next gen going to be bloody painful-I expect the publishers will be waiting for me to be bent over with a smile whilst i fork out for yet more DLC, endure more day 1 patches and patches to fix patches and all in name of progress, plus here’s to even more content locked behind paywalls, yippe, are’nt we all so glad the Next generation is finally apon us?

    • Amen! Its funny as I can’t remember any stories from the current gen about what resolution or frame rate a game was. Also I’ve played hundreds of games this gen and don’t have a clue what the resolution or framerates were.

      • The power of Microsoft’s FUD machine now coming back to bite them.

        http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Reddit-Xbox-One-Reputation-Management-upvote-downvote,23014.html

Seems Microsoft as usual are desperately paying for positive spin to counteract the 720p problems of the XBOX One.

      • Really?

CoD was always being lambasted as being below 720p, GT5 and Wipeout HD praised for 1080p. Halo 3 was being upscaled from sub-720p resolutions, and there were several games where the PS3 got a stinker of a port, with GTA4 looking noticeably worse than the Xbox 360 version, through the lower resolution and a blurry AA filter.

      • @Darklord that kind of thing is nothing new, ea/bioware were caught out doing fake reviews on metacritic ages ago. And what’s FUD mean?

@Stefan I do faintly remember the Halo stories but that’s about it. Just seems that all the gaming sites are interested in lately is the resolution & framerates of each game. I guess its a bigger issue than I care for.

      • There’s always been comparisons of graphics frame rates and wot not this gen,and for years PS3 owners have had 360 owners slagging the PS3 and its So called inferior games and now things are looking like there other way round suddenly none of those things matter.

      • Wardy, I’m talking specifically about the obsession with resolution & frame rate, not graphics in general.

      • No worries Starman it wasn’t meant to come across the way I think it did anyway, just a general view of how its been over last few years with people and now things are possibly a bit different all of a sudden things like this don’t matter anymore. ;)

  5. Sob…angry tired tonight…still ‘bitter’ at dissapointment of original Dead Rising once you got past superb opening…

WTF do you mean i’ve a strict time limit? it’s a sandbox game, who the hell thought up the save game feature?..why is this feeling like PS2 State Of Emergency in a better graphics engine?…why has my 360 got a power brick (not seen in my house since the C64), why am i so angry?, where’s my Holodeck?….

    :-)

    • Played it on the PC and couldn’t believe the time restriction so found a “trainer” which slows the game-time and let’s us muck around properly. That was far more fun. Don’t think I would’ve bought it otherwise. Silly buggers.

  6. 720p/1080p 30fps/60fps is a load of nonsense… that is until you watch the uncompressed video of Killzone and see how buttery smooth it looks.

Let’s be honest – none of us would turn down to choice to play every game at 60fps in 1080p… but there are limitations (usually price of the rig). The start of this gen sees PS4 being more capable of performing to this spec than the Xbone,

Having owned a PS3 for the whole of the previous generation, I’m in no position to say that just being able to run third party games at a higher frame-rate/resolution is the making of a console… it’s the games themselves that count – but biased as I am, Sony produced so many more of these generation defining experiences than were available on Xbox… and I am pretty certain this will continue into this generation (plus the increased promotion of indie-games).

Now we’re looking at maybe a more capable platform, with hopefully the best selection of games for the next 5-7 years.

I’ll undo my whole argument by saying that the next-gen game I am most looking forward to is Hotline Miami 2 (I’m sure the devs can muster 60fps at 1080p for that one’s grainy goodness) :P

  7. Racing games are by standard extremely linear so can easily get required frame rate hence Forza’s 1080p/60fps.

Wipeout HD and GT5/6 are both 1080p on PS3 and that’s current gen.

Open world racers of course not so much.

But sucks for Xbone buyers that most of there launch games won’t take advantage of there 6 year old Full HD TV.

    • Gt5 is 1280×1080 and Gt6 is 1440×1080, neither is proper full HD 1920×1080. And Wipeout dynamically alters it’s resolution to maintain performance, but you can’t tell. Yes, I’m a geek…

      • yes but you know what I mean in that racing games are the genre what doesn’t tax systems too much hence the relatively ease of full HD or near too.

  8. @Braun I totally games should be admired as games. But I also care about gamers and hopefully you guys do too. When I see friends getting ready to pony up £400+ on an X1 I feel like they’re getting a bad deal, as gamers. When I see M$ explaining that 720 vs 1080 is minimal, regardless of what you think, I see them clumping core gamers in with the casuals. You should all agree the casuals won’t be on these sites so won’t get these messages. Therefore an insult to gamers. I don’t like M$ to start with so maybe I’m overly biased. What do you guys think?

  9. for those of you who say you are not bothered, or don’t understand why people keep bringing up 720p/1080p, it’s because we are talking about next gen, all next gen games should be able to reach the highest HD spec, the frame rate, is another matter, 30fps should be the minimum (most games this gen can achieve this) I don’t really care if it’s 60fps (I only care that it runs smoothly)

and as for this 900p bullshit, is that even supported by all plasma/LCD/LED sets? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that resolution as an option.

    • Ah, it’s upscaled from 900p to 1080p whereas the XO’s output is upscaled from 720p. What was interesting was the difference that extra 180p (900-720=180) makes. 900p, mathematically, might reside half way between 720p and 1080p but visually, it’s way nearer 1080p than many people may think. It’s more 70% over to the 1080p visuals than halfway.

I will say this, though. If GTA V can look this good (in 720p?) then it would look wonderful with decent AA and crisper textures. Sure, I’d like it at 1080p but 720p is genuinely acceptable assuming the image is festooned with loveliness and still looking relatively sharp.

  10. After all the frame rate problem talk that I’ve heard about Dead Rising 3 I just hope they can lock 30fps in without any drops.
