“Well-Known” Game Companies Looking To Bid In 38 Studios Auction

Around “two dozen” companies are eyeing next month’s 38 Studios auction, including “well-known industry figures” from the United States, Europe, and Asia.

38 Studios, best known for open-world RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, went bankrupt shortly after the release of its debut. The developer, founded by former baseball star, Curt Schilling, set up shop in Rhode Island after a controversial $75m loan deal.

The auction will take place, by phone, on December 11th with bids due on the 4th. All proceeds will go to the state of Rhode Island.

Included in the auction is a shopping list of assets with 38’s unfinished MMORPG, Project Copernicus, at the helm. Curt Schilling’s love for the popular genre was one of the main reasons for his involvement in the video game sector.

Sequel rights for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning are also on the cards as well as internal engine tech and social media platform, Helios.

There are no clues as to who the bidders may be though we’re sure a number of familiar names will crop up when the auction closes next month.

  1. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning was an excellent RPG despite its many problems. Really hope someone picks it up.

    • Agreed, and were it not for PS+ I would never have given it any time but I loved it. Sad to see another studio go under, here’s hoping the sequel can be rescued as I will def part with cash for it.

    • Agreed. It was essentially an offline World of Warcraft in structure, but with a much more engaging battle system. The only thing I was a bit disappointed by was the lacklustre endgame, which really petered out. Some dungeons / raids in the WoW-style would have made it one of my favourite RPGs of the last generation.

I really hope somebody good gets it and makes a sequel.

  2. Kingdoms of Amalur was wonderful. Both Hannypoppie (other half) and I really enjoyed our respective play-throughs. The combat system was particularly excellent… especially when you compare it to the likes of Skyrim.

I’d love to see the franchise continued somehow.
