Project Spark Coming To Retail This October

Microsoft has announced that a disc-based version of Project Spark will be available at retail on October 7th, exclusively for Xbox One. The ambitious, world-building title is planned as a free-to-play release for the firm’s latest gaming platform as well as PC and Xbox 360.

Those who pick up a $40 physical copy, dubbed the “Project Spark Starter Pack”, will unlock of swathe of bonus content including the Galaxies: First Contact expansion, a new playable character, and the first episode of the game’s singleplayer campaign.

When asked if a disc-based version will be available for Xbox 360, Microsoft replied:

Our team is focused on creating a great experience on Xbox One and Windows 8.1 first, and will then bring that to Xbox 360. We don’t have a timeline to share right now, but it’s certainly on our roadmap.

Project Spark is currently in open beta and is essentially Microsoft’s answer to Minecraft, LittleBigPlanet, Everquest Landmark and similar user content driven titles. Using a variety of tools, players can piece together animated films or fully-functional games which can then be shared and remixed.

It carries a solid albeit familiar concept and hopefully Project Spark won’t be buried beneath the end-of-year rush of releases.
