Destiny Makes $325 Million In 5 Days, With 100 Million Hours Played

Activision have announced that Destiny has sold through more than $325 million worth of copies of Destiny to consumers. There’s no denying that their unique approach to marketing worked then, and that the huge budget for this new IP was justified.

Bungie’s stats show that over 100 million hours of online play were logged in the first week, and that there were 137 million activities participated in. According to Activision’s CEO Eric Hirshberg, that’s “on par” with the engagement levels of their extremely popular Call of Duty franchise. He then went on to reinforce the fact that the game will grow as a platform:

Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can’t put down their controllers. And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game.

Those figures are quite incredible, and it’s clear that Bungie have struck gold again with Destiny. There will no doubt be much more to follow – whether that’s a sequel or they simply expand on the existing game – and if you’re hoping to join the millions of players, then Destiny is available for PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360 right now.

I expect that to at least triple over the next few weeks,so glad to see it’s taken off so well.I’d like to see where Bungie take it like yourself will they expand the universe will we get to go where it all started?A lot of things to look forward to and a lot more to come.I’ve have to say that i’m really enjoying the game and everything they’ve done with it.Well worth buying.

    All joking aside,I’ve put in a fair few hours and I’m loving it and can’t seem to put my controller down!

  3. I wish they had spent a fraction of that budget improving the actual game but I still enjoyed it for what it was.

  4. Now that the reviews and general opinions are out, most of which thinks the game is a 7/10 at best I wouldn’t be surprised if the sales drop off quite quickly.

    • Out of 63 critic reviews on Metacritic, there are 40 that give it at least 8/10. (That’s counting 75% or above as at least 8/10).

      And the overall score is 76, which means an 8/10 if you want to use that scale.

      Also, that’s including scores from sites you’ve never heard of that give low review scores anyway. (What’s Level7.nu?? Why does it give scores 4.1 points lower than average?)

      The ridiculous amounts of hype for the game have possibly hurt the scores in some cases. Less reputable sites seem to be desperately trying to find flaws they’d possibly let other games get away with. And the rush to review it doesn’t help either. Don’t trust any review published before yesterday.

      I suspect the vast majority of people don’t pay any attention to reviews anyway, so it’s really not going to hurt sales at all.

      • We’ll see I guess. Everyone I know with the game has found it ok but nothing amazing. Titanfall had a similar reaction with people wanting to put it down due to its hype and xbox exclusivity.

      • I think most of the criticisms raised are valid points though to be fair. You can’t fault the game on a technical level but the content is seriously lacking as it stands. Sure, it will improve over time but isn’t that the case with most games these days via patches/dlc? People need to know if it’s worth buying now and clearly it’s dividing opinions.

        For me, Destiny is a missed opportunity. It could have been an epic next gen adventure (the next Mass Effect) but there’s nothing epic about Destiny. Not a single thing happens in the whole game. You’re dropped onto one of four maps with a basic objective and all you do is shoot numerous respawning enemies over and over again. That’s it. That’s the whole game. It’s fun at first but it’s hardly groundbreaking. Sure, you can replay the levels on a higher difficulty or restart the game with a different class but the game just isn’t interesting enough for multiple playthroughs. Other than being always online, Destiny doesn’t do anything that previous gen games haven’t already done before, and they did it a lot better.

        I think a 6 or a 7/10 is very reasonable.

      • If it was the next Mass Effect, I wouldn’t have bought it & wouldn’t be enjoying it anywhere near as much as I am enjoying Destiny.

        Far too much waffle & forging relationships for my liking in ME games. Sometimes you just want to get down to actually playing a game & that is one area that Destiny does very well in (bar the slightly long load times).

        Also, ME is a space exploration RPG, whereas this is closer to a shared world shooter. A better comparison would probably be Borderlands. I like Borderlands as well, but whether one is better than the other I couldn’t really say at this stage. It’s just kinda the same but different, which is enough for me.

        & let’s not forget that a 7 (or even a 6 to a lesser extent) is still a good score. I do feel that some are picking holes just for the sake of it though, simply because it didn’t meet their lofty expectations of what they expected it to be. For me, it’s probably a solid 8, but I am not particularly far through yet, so my opinion probably isn’t worth much.

    I wouldn’t say that was on par with CoD at all. Mainly because Destiny is always online.

    To explain better, CoD gamers choose to log that much time online. Destiny players have no choice.

    Not that I am taking anything away from the stats of course (& I have really enjoyed the little bits that I have played of it), I am just saying that the two can’t really be compared in the same way.
