What We Played #177: Driveclub, Shadow Of Mordor & Smash Bros.

Hello! I think this is my first time covering What We Played, so I’m just going to get right in and tell you about the games I’ve been playing. There are quite a few, actually; I’ve found time this week to play several games (and actually complete one!) which is a huge change from usual.

The game I completed was Shadow of Mordor. It’s a good game with an incredible system at its core though one which becomes disappointingly easy in the end game. I’ve also been playing Alien: Isolation and reached Medical, and it’s starting to get properly terrifying now. This is such a well made game, a true homage to the original film.

Next up is Super Smash Bros. For 3DS, which I’ve mainly been playing online with friends. I think Zero Suit Samus is my favourite character now, or maybe Little Mac, as I’m not as good with my previous favourites of Toon Link and Lucario. I still win though, unless I’m playing against Sam, in which case I lose a lot. Also on my 3DS was a demo for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which reminded me of how great the series is.

Enough from me then, Aran has been attempting the Destiny raid and describes it as a “bloody hard event” as he and his group haven’t even beaten the first boss, but “will prevail eventually”. They just need me to join their team, and I’ll one shot kill the boss and run straight through to the Vault of Glass. Aran also jumped in Anarchy Reigns from his backlog, which he describes an “odd game”. Apparently, to unlock levels, “you have to beat up hundreds of guys in the hub area.”

Stefan has also been playing more Destiny, going through the Raid once more and actually getting some of the rather useful Raid gear so he can try and level up even further. The server problems might have meant he didn’t play much Driveclub this week, but he did get some racing done, for his review of F1 2014.

Peter has been playing Mini Metro, which Kris wrote about earlier this week. In addition to that, he’s played some Elite as the new beta has “outposts, exploring and another 500 locations to do it in.” He’s also been playing Democracy 3 at the request of a podcast listener:

I’m playing with a mod that lets me rule over Poland because a podcast listener requested it. There’s a lot of religion in Poland and they don’t seem to like my “nothing but evolution in schools, graphic sex education and freely available abortions” policies right now, but they’ll get used to them.

“Natural Doctrine has been sapping away my free time” says Jim, describing it as a title “for RPG-loving masochists and those who have inhuman levels of patience”. The new Skylanders “is pretty much on the same page although I’m starting to warm towards its trap system” while Samurai Warriors 4 “seems to be an actual improvement on the series as opposed to throwing in a few incremental changes.”

As already mentioned, Sam has been beating me at Smash Bros., but he’s finding the For Glory online mode a challenge: “it’s eroded any faith I had in my playing ability.” For his “less adrenaline-fueled fun” he has turned to FF Theatrhythm Curtain Call which is “no match for the likes of Elite Beat Agents” and despite there being a lot to it, he’s just been playing it like a standard music game.

“This week I’ve been playing Bayonetta 2 and Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition, both of which I reviewed – and both of which were great!” says Dom. Despite the server woes, he’s also been playing Driveclub, and says “it deserves to gain a good following”. Finally, he’s been playing Shadow of Mordor:

Shadow Of Mordor is good, though I’ve allowed the same Uruk to kill me repeatedly, turning him into an absolute nightmare thanks to the nemesis system! He also keeps turning up when I’m fighting other captains, killing me and levelling them up too! The nemesis system is a great idea, but so far it’s punishing the hell out of me!

That’s it from us, have you played anything exciting this week?

  1. Like Dom, despite the server woes I’ve been playing Driveclub. It’s bloody addictive and once the server/connection disaster is sorted out I can see this being about for quite a while.

    • Especially with Project Cars delayed I can see this doing well, if they sort out the problems

  2. Managed to play quite a few different games this week, lots of Elite Dangerous, Diablo, Driveclub, a few games of Madden 15, only wish the Redskins were doing as well in real life, Infamous First Light, Trials Fusion (still disappointed that there is no online multiplayer) and Borderlands arrived this morning.

  3. I’ve mostly been playing Killzone Shadow Fall. I think and half way through the single player campaign and, well, it’s awful. Terrible pacing, boring gunplay, not enough enemies, rubbish cutscenes with bad lip synching, disastrous silences and ridiculously badly conveyed plot (which seems quite interesting from the collectibles). Other than the first main mission, which was promisingly good fun, I’m disappointed. It’s pretty though, especially that first mission on the hillside, and then there’s the multiplayer, wow!! Totally worth the money for that alone, that’s why you buy Killzone games! Cracking.

    • Oh, and I’ve got a PS4 again, yay! Don’t tell my wife though…

  4. Played Fifa 15 and spend hours on trying to get the Extra Effort Trophy and finally got the Platinum. Also completed Alien Isolation twice and got the Platinum. Only game left now is Drive Club, I am enjoying it and have completed the career got all the stars. Did manage to get a few online races in the past 3 days and even if it’s still down I am still enjoying playing offline to learn the roads and trying out all vehicles and to get as much accolades as I can to level up and the club when it has connection.

  5. Lots more Diablo, up to paragon 211 now. Enjoying the new greater rifts and legendary gems.
Played a bit more Drive club but the inconsistent servers are really annoying.
Played through the first 2 masters in Peggle 2.
Still playing through Trine 2 with Forrest and Pixel_nme.
More Fantasy Life and Smash Bros on 3DS. Completed the Fantasy Life story but still have plenty to do.

  6. Usually i have five or six games on the go at once but this week it’s been all Driveclub – even Minecraft didn’t get a look in, not even to check out the Vita version … how very, very odd..

  7. Mordor, Forza Horizon 2 & Warriors Orochi 3. Shadow of Mordor is definitely in my top 5 of the year so far, really enjoying it.

  8. I’ve been pretty much addicted to Dust the elysian tail. I got to the final boss battle and thought it’d be funny to jump into the automatic save but it wasn’t. As I died in the Gaius fight it sent me back to the save point and it glitched on me. Luckily for me I did a hard save earlier in the level do didn’t have to go back to far. I’ve also played a bit of Forza horizon 2, FIFA 15 and Minecraft Vita.

  9. I’ve been playing the PES 15 demo and I’m finding the game-play absolutely incredible. Best football game of all time level incredible.

I say that as someone who enjoyed games as a kid a little more so have a bias towards releases in the late 90s/early 00s and also as someone whose played upwards of 30 different football games since 1996.
