WeView: The Last Of Us Remastered

This is The Last of Us’ second appearance under the WeView spotlight. When we took a look at the game, just over a year ago now, it received an impressive twenty-eight Buy It votes. Can the remastered version achieve the same indisputable result?

For me, The Last of Us is the best game I’ve ever played. The game sent me on an emotional roller-coaster as you witnessed an initial tentative relationship between Joel and Ellie blossom into something very special indeed.

The gameplay bits between were immensely satisfying too, despite it feeling slightly clunky compared to the Uncharted series. Naughty Dog created a masterpiece in my eyes, and that’s without even mentioning the spectacular visuals. The remastered version came complete with all the DLC packs, but more noticeably ran at 60fps, making The Last of Us experience just that bit better.

Alex reviewed the original game for TSA, scoring it 10/10. He concluded:

It’s in the game’s storytelling and scripting that the real surprises lay. Joel and Ellie’s story is a sprawling, often desperate struggle for survival against insurmountable odds and a series of increasing bad rolls of the dice, and it’s expertly told.

Blair took a look at the Left Behind DLC, which focuses on Ellie’s story before The Last of Us’ events. He concluded in his review:

Left Behind is the perfect complimentary side-dish for The Last of Us. It’s happier at points, but just as bleak at others, and everything else is pretty much on par with any of the other chapters in the tale. There’s a brilliant approach to the narrative, while Ellie and Riley’s charm shines throughout, their wonder and imagination matching exactly how you’ll feel as you return to this world.

Now it’s over to you. As previously mentioned we’ve already covered The Last of Us before, so this time we’re interested to hear if the game still had the same impact on the PlayStation 4, and if you would recommend buying the game for a second time. Let us know in the comments below and give the game either a Buy It, Sale It, Plus It or Avoid It Rating. Be sure to get your comments in by Sunday evening.

  1. If you have a Playstation and don’t own The Last of Us, go get it.

    Simple as.

The Last of Us Remastered is the best version of the game. As someone who already owned TLoU on PS3 (the Ellie Edition) and had all the DLC, I adored the chance to buy it again on PS4. It’s the same game, the same story, the same gameplay. In other words, it’s perfect. But looks even better. And has added bonus content such as commentaries (yes, like the extras on a film) and a photo mode. The multiplayer is better too as everybody has the same maps, there’s none of the fragmentation that the DLC brought.

So to summarise: It’s that perfect game again. But it looks better. And has more content. Even that fantastic single-player DLC. It’s also cheaper than most PS4 games.

    Go BUY IT.

  2. Buy it Buy it Buy it!! I missed this on PS3, bought it day 1 on PS4. Admittedly, lot long after buying it, I nearly broke my controller and threw the disc out the window cause I couldn’t get to grips with it, but then some of you persuaded me on Twitter to persevere, and boy I’m glad I did. This has to be one of the best games I have ever played. The story really took me on a journey, and never has a game grabbed my attention from the start due to *that* cutscene before. My wife, who doesn’t really like games but doesn’t mind me playing, actually banned me from playing without here there to watch it. Have to admit, I was a bit disappointed with the included DLC, as it finished before I felt it really started!

Big fan of Naughty Dog, and they have made an absolute classic. Have played it through twice to completion, and can’t remember last time I did that on any game. Not sure if it’s a good thing or bad thing that I missed out on PS3, but the quality of PS4 was nothing short of stunning. If you haven’t played it, buy it, and if like me you start off think ‘meh’ stick with it, it pays dividends.

    BUY IT

  3. When the remaster was first announced my initial reaction was “urgh, so this is what new gen will be. 12 month old games rereleased to make a quick buck…”

    I was wrong.

I bought the remaster as there was little else for me to play at the time and I had £40 of PSN credit burning a whole in my virtual pocket. I’d played the PS3 version through 3 times but it’d been long enough since the last to not feel fatigued with it. The remaster feels like *this* is the game Naughty Dog wanted to make for PS3 but were technically limited by the ageing hardware.

The graphics aren’t just the subtle upgrade I was expecting. It really highlights that PS3 was showing its age. The gameplay itself feels tighter (maybe because of the 60fps?) whilst the story still grips. You get all the original DLC bundled in – something I missed out on on PS3. The multiplayer is perhaps the most original and addictive form of online play since COD4 and, aside from a few issues at launch, runs just as well as (if not better than) the original and is just as busy…

I can’t recommend it highly enough. THIS is what a remaster should be. There’s a case for waiting til it’s on sale if you rinsed the original and all its add on content I guess, but for me, it has to be a BUY IT. Even more so if you never played it on PS3.

  4. Not played it yet so not reading article but can I just say BOUGHT IT (today). Gonna be my half term treat after kids have gone nan-nights!

  5. I had my second playthrough on PS3 when the HD remaster released, i couldn’t justify buying it again when it still looks so stunning on PS3. I won’t be ready to play it again for another twelve months so by that time i will take advantage and Sale it.

  6. While not a bad game, I left the ps3 version unfinished and never had any urge or desire to go back and finish it, starting out as a epic new IP but shortly turning into mindless zombie killing.

I was never able to ignore to terrible AI of the girl you have following you, running in plain view of enemy’s and not being seen.

But like I originally said, it’s by no means a bad game but replay value is lacking (based on other opinions, which I can agree with)

For me it’s a bargain bin it. Which I’m waiting for also, to have another go at finishing it

    • This is a WeView for the Remastered, not the original… You should give it a go before voting ;-)

  7. No idea why,but I got into it a lot more playing it on the PS4 for some reason, and have even started it again for certain trophies.
Maybe it’s the lack of games available on the platform in comparison?

Possibly the best title on PS3,behind GTA V and Red Dead I’d say.

  8. Oh,and a buy it from me

  9. I loved TLoU on PS3 but won’t be picking up the PS4 version. I’d definitely recommend a ‘buy it’ if you haven’t played it before though.

  10. Personally I didn’t really enjoy it and eventually stopped playing half way through. Naughty Dog games just feel a bit too “floaty” for my tastes and there wasn’t a huge amount of variety to the gameplay.

Multiplayer was quite unique and enjoyable though, particularly when played with a friend or two. I just didn’t find much to keep me coming back.

If you are a fan of Naughty Dog games, BUY it as this is probably their best work, but if you couldn’t get into the Uncharted games there isn’t much to win you over here so AVOID.
