No DLC Planned For Smash Bros. Beyond Mewtwo

When Nintendo announced that Mewtwo would be coming to both the 3DS and Wii U versions of Smash Bros. next year, they mentioned that it does take a lot of time to create a fighter in this way, almost discounting the possibility of further new characters any time soon.

But, after the success of Mario Kart 8’s DLC, which is brilliant fun at a great price point, we thought they might change their mind and at least support the game with further stages or content of some sort. That could be the case, but the series’ creator Masahiro Sakurai doesn’t seem to want to go down this path.

“I understand that DLC could add a lot to the appeal of Smash Bros.” he said, speaking to Videogamer, “However, I think there might be criticism that we are cutting up content to sell characters one by one, or that we are adding things later that should have been there from the start.”

That’s a fair point, and he goes on to reiterate that creating a fighter takes a huge investment. And while they’ve invested a lot in the game already, the reception could be soured by the announcement of DLC. So that’s a not yet rather than a not ever, but it doesn’t sound entirely promising, does it?

“Creating DLC would involve large additional costs and require the involvement of a lot of people. I can’t yet give you an answer about whether the price would justify the costs and criticisms mentioned.” finished Sakurai. Hopefully the release of the Mewtwo DLC can justify more in the future then, but it looks like we’ll be waiting a while before seeing something more substantial – or anything else at all.

Super Smash Bros. releases on Wii U next week in the UK. We’ll have a review for you to feast upon before then.

  1. I usually hate DLC but it’s a bit disappointing we won’t be seeing any in Smash Bros. Games like Mario Kart and Smash Bros only come out once every console generation so releasing some add-on content (new characters, stages, etc) every year or so would have made sense to me and kept everything fresh. Oh well, the game looks awesome and I cannot wait for next Friday :D

  2. I still think there’ll be more, but likely released quite late, similarly to Mario Kart. Keep in mind Sakurai loves trolling.
