Halo: The Master Chief Collection Owners To Get Freebies, Including Halo 3:ODST

As an apology for the rather botched launch of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, anyone who has played the game since launch on 11th November through to 19th December will be eligible for a raft of free content, not least of which is the full campaign for Halo 3: ODST which is being ported to Xbox One.

Presumably that means that ODST will be available to everyone at some point, and perhaps even an Xbox One version of Halo 5.

Here is a list of the free Apology DLC.

  • Halo 3: ODST Campaign – Development has just started on the campaign for Halo 3: ODST, which will be available within Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and upgraded to 1080p resolution, running at 60fps. It will be available for free to anyone who has played Halo: The Master Chief Collection since launch 11.11.14 through 12.19.14..
  • “Relic” Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer Map – Available via a free content update to Halo: The Master Chief Collection, we will reimagine the fan-favorite map “Relic,” fully remastered and running at 1080p resolution and 60fps. We chose this map based on its suitability for Slayer and Objective modes and its ability to support teams of varying sizes. And you can trust that Certain Affinity will tune and tweak the map to make it even better than you remember.
  • 1 Month of Xbox Live Gold
  • Exclusive In-Game Nameplate
  • Exclusive In-Game Avatar

  1. If only devs would get it right first time it would probably save them money rather than rushing it out and then have the word of mouth work against the game which happened to AC Unity.

Yet, I don’t have an XB1 nor have I played this game so I cannot say through personal experience but, how did this game get high scores if its online modes were so ‘botched’? The same can be said about a number of games released this year. PES 2015 for example was unplayable online for the first week or so before they patched the hell out of it.

All I want for Christmas is games to work properly when they are released.

    • As I recall, the online issues didn’t last for long, and weren’t extensive. Issues with matchmaking, player load and stuff like that, but I think they sorted it out within 1-2 weeks.

I’m surprised they’ve offered this compensation as it never felt like the shortcomings were serious enough to hurt reputation unlike the nearly unplayable Unity or Driveclub.

      • Halo MCC online matchmaking is still not working for a lot of people, their are also bugs in the single player campaigns to do with checkpoints, achievement unlock and dodgy framerate. So no it was not sorted after 2 weeks their are massive problems over a month later! Giving us additional maps and ODST, which looked like they planned to charge for, is not good enough it should have been included in the first place!

I personally believe that 343i are getting away lightly as Halo is such a well know IP. Driveclub seems to be recovering from its launch and seems to be picking up strong sales through word of mouth.

      • ODST didn’t need to be included in the first place. Isn’t three games enough? It would just have made things worse, as it’s clear the problem is they bit off a bit more than they could chew.

Development was fragmented across too many studios, and the timeframe was too short.

Too many chiefs in the kitchen.

      • “Too many Chiefs in the kitchen”

        .. *applauds* :)

      • Too many chefs, not enough Indians.

      • Still doesn’t work for me.

      • Ironic (and strange) that there has been little news/commotion over it (not that I’ve heard anyway). Everyone seemed to go to town on Driveclub being broken, I couldn’t sneeze without seeing news of it somewhere.

  2. A great ‘freebie’ though I think it should have been included in the collection in the first place, especially as without the problems they’d be undoubtedly charging for it. It’s probably not the toughest thing to deal with either as it used 3’s engine and shared the same multiplayer (if I remember rightly).

Either way, it’s probably my favourite Halo game so I’ll look forward to revisiting it.

  3. Damn, I bought this two weeks ago but haven’t played it because I read about all the bugs. I was waiting for it to be patched up and working properly. At least it was a good price in the sale.

  4. Good offer, I’ve mainly been on the campaigns and whenever I’ve tried multiplayer it either finds a match quickly or not at all. The stupid thing is after a match you’re all dumped back to the menu instead of another map loading up.

I think there’s definitely been a change this year with publishers keen to make amends for botched releases rather than the usual “it’ll be fixed, just wait” approach.

  5. Ahh damn, I bought this game as a deal with an Xbox One a few weeks ago but decided to keep it unopened until Christmas Day. I’m guessing I’ll miss out on these freebies which I could’ve otherwise had if I opened the console earlier, d’oh! :(

If I’m honest I don’t really mind if multilayer in games doesn’t work anyway, I’m more of a single-player story kinda guy.
