When we post a story about a game running on a lower resolution on Xbox One than on PlayStation 4 some people question if it matters. Well it turns out it does, in fact games running at a higher resolution on PS4 is the top reason why Americans are choosing the console over Xbox One, according to Nielsen.
Interestingly, the second reason for purchasing a PS4 is the blu-rayer player, which the Xbox One also has but perhaps Microsoft have not got that message through to consumers. Xbox owners are a loyal bunch stating that the brand is top reason for buying the new console, along with exclusive games.
They survey also reports that 43% of Xbox One owners previously had a PlayStation 3, but 59% of PlayStation 4 owners previously owned an Xbox 360.

Got PS4 because I started off with a PS1 when I must have been 4-5 years old, so you could say I was brought up with PlayStation and that may be why I feel a connection, a love, even, to everything PS.
Got a PS2, then PS3, but last gen I seriously considered getting another console, the 360, mainly because more of my friends had one and cod was in its peak then.
I came into this gen with an open mind, even going xbox over PS, especially after Sony’s struggles and the suggestion PS may be sold off or whatever. The PS4 reveal changed my mind some way, and I also discovered the leaked specs.
I will admit, I was actually quite impressed with the X1 reveal, For all the TV focus, I saw the gaming potential, and this made me think about getting BOTH for the first time.
The DRM/Always online and other BS coming out of MS did put me off for a while. But Phil Spencer, the Kinect -Free Bundle made me get an X1, but I was determined to buy all games second hand and not get live.
Fast forward to today, I got a PS4 at launch, and an X1 in August 2014, my stance as suffered somewhat on the X1, I still only get exclusives on it but I bought FH2 and Halo brand new day one.
I prefer PS4 because, UI/system is laid out more logically and is faster in most areas, graphics/performance is generally better, friends, because it’s PS, and last but not least, trophies.
Essay over.

This is quite interesting data, actually, and it can be interpreted in several ways.
The Wii is confirmed as a toy for kids, at least this view seems to be the main reason for buying it. This doesn’t surprise me, but it’s always good to get the confirmation by the few people actually buying this sort of hardware.
PS4 owners seem to have some good reasons for buying the console, like resolution or processing power, and a Blu-ray player (even if you could get the latter also elsewhere).
Then, Xbone owners mostly don’t seem to have a reason except for ‘it’s MS, and I believe everything they say and I buy everything they sell’ (which is quite incredible, given the failure rates of their hardware not too long ago). And they still dream their console had the better processing power (which may be true compared to the Wii).
However, survey data like this is always open for completely different interpretations, as people retrospectively explain their reasons, which might in fact have been very different.
In my case, the main cause was that when I arrived from outer space, I landed near Japan, and that determined the console I bought. The reason I would give, when asked, is of course that the PS4 is just the best console on this planet. There are better ones elsewhere, but I had to leave in a hurry back then.

I was brought up around Nintendo and Sega and never owned a PS1. GTA3 prompted me to get a PS2 and thus my Playstation love-in began. That said, I had little interest in the PS3/360 gen until a mate showed me COD4 on his PS3 so that was that.
MS really put me off the X1 with their reveal and their subsequent backtracking. I’d have respected them a lot more if they said “this is our vision and this is why it’ll work” rather than saying “ok we’ll change that. And that. And that…”. Aside from that, the PS4’s specs in relation to the X1’s are what sealed it. Not just because the PS4 will have better looking games but I just can’t see the X1 lasting as long as the PS4, with game quality on the X1 struggling to keep up in the years to come. The fact I could bring my existing trophy collection was definitely a factor too.
I do have a Wii U too. I will always buy Nintendo’s latest home console simply because the first party games are by far the best of the 3. Pure fun to play.

Xbox One! It is better at multitasking, the games are still great, a few extra pixels do not determine how good a game is. Apart from lacking the horsepower the PS4 has – the Xbox One has actually become more game focused and better if you want more gaming features; Twitch App, Achievement leaderboard updates every 30 days, YouTube snapped, Better online, Game Hubs – the list goes on. The Xbox One is the better “complete” package! Not to mention the future proofing.
No wait, PS4! It is more powerful, simples! Any extra faff can be done on my iPad/phone! Raw power for the games and only games! Internal power supply, smaller and sleeker, more features on the pad and Share Play!
Actually, sod that, Wii U! Second Screen out of the box, Nintendo only games, tiny neat little console and curtains on the main screen when using the browser – CURTAINS!!!
Alright, seriously – if I had choose just one (I’ve owned and hammered all) then it would be the little Mario Watch I got from Santa when I was 10. That thing rules! It was a great game, nobody cared about the res or framerate, I hadn’t a clue of the sales figures for the device, there was no future proofing/updates/exclusives line-up, just pure enjoyment!
Mankind has turned into this weird f*cktard of a species that needs to have pissing contests over everything he buys! Not being sexist here, I say he because my woman has on many occasion steered me in the right direction with “does it actually f*cking matter?”. With grey hairs has come wisdom and I start realising – she is right – it doesn’t bloody matter! It is in our very nature to compete in all that we do, a genetic thing, but have we not evolved to a state where we can actually just let someone enjoy whatever it is they have purchased without slating it and/or comparing it to our own purchase – no, no we haven’t. We will fling crap at the other product, Google the sh*t out of the competition for any paragraph containing the words flawed, less, weaker, worse, sales, pixels, exclusives and who/won/E3! Pathetic. Sadly, even this great site has not proved immune to fanboys in recent months where once they were squashed upon their first “troll” or whatever the hip phrase is. To be honest, until recently I have been guilty of much of the above too. But then decided to get a life, which I am just waiting for someone to say does not have a high enough framerate :-p
Go with whatever brings you entertainment – and ignore the rest. Have your cake, eat it, and don’t let anyone or indeed the internet tell you that you are wrong for enjoying that cake.

Awesome, enjoyed reading that ;)

I’ve stuck with the Playstation brand from the beginning and although PS4 might be the powerhouse it certainly hasn’t lived up to expectation yet for me. The last three gens have all been won by Sony in my eyes but this latest gen just feels a bit meh in comparison, which obviously equates to entertainment value and not pixels occupying the screen.
I’m sure there’ll be a turnaround and the titles will arrive which should alter my current perception but at the moment I just find proceedings mediocre.

Over a year in, great available software should be the reason people are buying a console. I guess I’ll buy when the titles I want are finally available, but for now the Wii U is the only “next gen” (ha!) machine that holds my interest.
