What We Played #195: Battlefield Hardline, Ori and the Blind Forest & GTA V

It’s that wonderful time of week again when we talk about what games we’ve been playing, why we all enjoy train collections, and which biscuits are our favorites. No, wait, just the first one. Just what video games we’ve been playing.

Tuffcub gets us off the ground this week with a wealth of good games from his backlog and a couple of things he’s been playing for the site. He started with Destiny and finally hit level 32, but he also started the Metro Redux collection on PS4, and played a bit of OlliOlli 2. He also loaded up Counterspy on the Vita, which he said he’s enjoyed but the lengthy load times have proved to be a bit of a problem.

Sticking with his Vita, next he played Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype, which he wrote a mostly positive review about, awarding the game a 7 out of 10. Finally, he played The Assignment DLC for The Evil Within, which he spoke very highly of in his review, but he noted that it has given him a couple of nightmares.

Dom is up next and was nice enough to take the time to e-mail us about what he’s been playing, despite the fact that he’s on a lovely vacation in Tenerife. We know it’s lovely because he’s torturing us with awesome pictures while the rest of us are stuck in the TSA towers playing video games. What a terrible life we live. Anyway, he’s been playing Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Codename STEAM, and he noted that while he sees more Vitas around the poolside, he’s been enjoying his 3DS in the toasty sun.

Aran keeps us afloat with a bit of Aaru’s Awakening, a game that he said he played so the rest of us don’t have to. In case you’re thinking you just have to pick it up, be sure you check out his review first. He followed that up with Kick & Fennick, which he’s found thoroughly enjoyable, assuming you have a Vita to play it on.

Next is Blair, our resident head honcho, and he’s been digging into Grand Theft Auto V’s new heist expansion. While a couple of the middle heists weren’t exactly thrillers, he said the final heist was awesome and that he might even be willing to pay for more of them. Here’s what came next for Blair:

I’ve also played Bayonetta on Wii U – I had missed this the first time round so picked up the double-pack with its sequel and am really quite enjoy it. It’s overly-sexualised, the plot is all over the place, and it’s a bit too outlandish at times, but that fast-paced action gameplay keeps me coming back.

Stefan starts to wrap us up this week and he predominately played Battlefield Hardline for the review that went live a few days ago. He gave it an 8 out of 10 and said that although it’s riding the coattails of the Battlefield franchise, Visceral have adapted the gameplay to suit another setting. He also mentioned that he hates colons. Not the one in your bum, but the one that isn’t supposed to be between ‘Battlefield’ and ‘Hardline’.

As for me, I started the week with a small bit of Dying Light, which I’ve enjoyed but fear might get lost in the current shuffle of games on my plate. I also played, beat, and reviewed Ori and the Blind Forest, which I gave a 10 out of 10 score, the first one of those I’ve handed out in a review. It’s truly one of the best games I’ve played in the past few years and is absolutely worth your time if you’re into platforming games. I also started playing through Halo 3 in the Master Chief Collection with a friend, and I grabbed Battlefield Hardline on launch day, which I’ve mostly enjoyed so far, though I haven’t touched the campaign yet.

So there it is again, what we’ve been doing. Now, would you kindly head to the comments and let us know what you’ve been playing?

  1. Kick & Fennick was rather good. A clever platformer that seemed to go under the radar of people’s attention for a bit.

As for me, a small bit of Extinction (not much this week), and quite a bit of GT6. The new Lexus concept is a twist on previous VGT cars, where it’s actually quite exciting to drive.

I managed to get some good BF3 games in, with one where I managed to get that rare RPG kill on a helicopter and more than a few by using a repair tool on enemy tanks. One guy also seemed to pay no attention to the fact that after stealth knifing one time, I might be there a second time. All in all I stealth knifed the guy 4 times with ten minutes before he realised he should check his surroundings, and even then I just shot him.

  2. Over the weekend I got the platinum on Dust giving me a new total of 2.

Rest of the week spent swearing at Olli Olli 2 trying to get a serviceable score to enter into the competition. I found the experience far too frustrating to get any enjoyment out of it and have now deleted the game.

  3. Still playing The Crew every now and again.
More Binding of Isaac, mostly for fun but I have been helping hunterstryfe get to grips with it too.
OlliOlli2 for the competition and to try and get the later challenges done (but they’re kicking my ass).
Delved into my backlog and played through (and 100%ed) The Last Tinker.
Picked up Mutant Mudds Deluxe on 3DS for £4 last night so I had a quick blast of that, it’s a really fun platformer.

    • Update – Binding of Isaac has finally been patched and I’ve got the platinum.

      • Nice one mate! I know how much effort you have put into that game and you earned that plat bigtime!

  4. GTA Heists for me. It’s a phenomenal update from my humble perspective. Andytorr and I were only saying a few days ago that we were respectively excited as hell to play them and couldn’t shake that “oh, god… cannot wait!” feeling throughout the daytime until the evening arrived and we jumped online. It’s child-like and wonderful. :-)

Also, have played a good few of them with quite the variety of TSA folk, so thank you to them too.

Adam (Guest)… your helicopter skills are second to none. Sadly, your landing skills were ACTUALLY “none”. :-)

  5. This week I didn’t play that much, but had a lot of variation in what I played. I’ve tried Trauma, and was working on my speedrun times and scores in Basement and Corporate lockdown. That’s, of course, all Alien: Isolation DLC, which I can’t get enough of. And, I’ve replayed some levels of the main game. :o)

  6. Mostly Destiny mostly, started DMC and picked up the Platinum for The Order enjoyed it,then i’ve also stared BF Hardline but mostly Destiny this week mostly.

  7. I’ve been playing three nights of GTA Heists, good fun. And it’s made me fire up the PS3 again, as I don’t have the fancy new version. Still got a minute of first-person mode going when riding a jetski, so some code may have carried over.

The rest have been spent on Cities Skylines. Which is a bit too good of a timesink.

Then there’s been some Mario Party 9 in preparation for tonights main event, and a bit of Pixeljunk Monsters. Damn that game is hard for rainbow-hunters.

  8. I played episode 2 of Tales from the Borderlands which is awesome.
Played more Olli Olli 2,I’m still awful at it and really struggle with it.
Also more Destiny,I just need boots to get to level 32,they just aren’t dropping for me!

  9. Eventually managed to finish a normal runthrough of MOH Warfighter after it decided 3/4 of the way through not to load my save game at all, but managed to get around it.

Not convinced I’ll do any more of it though… there is just something that I can’t quite put my finger on that feels “off” with every Frostbite 2+ game I’ve played, including BF3 and 4. Yet Frostbite 1/1.5 games (Bad Company 1/2, MOH 2010 MP) were fine.

Otherwise restarted COD AW on veteran, and more DriveClub.

  10. Screamride which is better than I expected and Ryse which looks lovely.
