What We Played #204: The Witcher, Project CARS & Splatoon

Hello and welcome once again to What We Played, the little feature we bring you each week to keep you caught up on what we’ve been  getting up to in the realms of video gaming. It’s been a bit of a busy week here on the site so not everyone was able to check in, but we’ll push forward anyway with the stories we do have.

Mark gets us started this week by continuing to burn rubber in Project CARS. He’s still been tearing up the streets in online multiplayer, annihilating anyone who dares to get in his way. Midway through the week he had a craving for Mega Drive games, so he picked up the collection on PS3, which included Ristar, Sonic the Hedgehog and Golden Axe. Finally, he joined the masses in the playing The Witcher 3 on Tuesday, a game he described as beautiful, and he noted how much fun it is to roam the open world and explore.

Next up is Stefan, who checked in for just long enough to tell me he’s been playing Destiny’s House of Wolves expansion that launched this week, which should come as a surprise to approximately no one, considering he is our resident Destiny expert.

Dom started his week with Forza Horizon 2, which he says he’s enjoyed immensely. Next he intends to play Driveclub, which should provide an interesting contrast to Horizon now that all the bugs have been ironed out. Here’s what else Dom has been up to:

I’ve been playing Halo in the Master Chief Collection in co-op, and it was all going well until we got to the Library. Now I haven’t played it for days as the thought of slogging through it fills me with dread! I’ve also carried on with a run through of Spira in the remastered Final Fantasy X. I’m really enjoying it again, though it’s got me wishing for a remaster of XII. Aside from that, a little Monster Hunter 4, Ultratron, and mine and Noah’s weekly foray into Disney Infinity mean it’s been a quieter week!

Finally we have Blair, our expert on all things Scotland. He also dove into The Witcher 3 this week, but said the sheer size of the game is a little daunting, with so many areas on the map to explore and so many jobs to take on. Blair also played some Splatoon, which he’s currently reviewing, and although he’s not at liberty to say too much about it right now, he did say that it’s just as fun as it looks.

Though he didn’t reply in time for this, Aran is another of the staff who’s been ensnared by The Witcher 3. Of course, he’s been forced to play it for review, but what with the early impressions of the game he posted on Tuesday and the final scored review that went up this morning, you can tell that he’s actually really enjoyed it.

Which brings us to me. I played Project CARS through Monday, getting to a good stopping point after winning the Formula B championship. I’ve had a grand time with that game and it might be my new favourite racer. I’m also the latest to get started with The Witcher 3, bright and early on Monday night just minutes after it unlocked. I’ve spent about 10 hours with it so far and I’ve quite enjoyed it. The combat is the weakest point of the game and takes a bit to get used to, but it’s still decent and everything else about the game is top quality.

So that just leaves us with you. What did you play this week? What were your gaming triumphs or successes? Tell us your tale in the comments.

  1. The Witcher 3.

I’ll no doubt be saying the same for a few weeks now.

  2. Ive been playing a lot of GTA V, flying around after collectibles and plugging away replaying missions. I got the Solid Gold Baby trophy yesterday, woohoo! Ive also been enjoying some Plants vs Zombies online.

  3. More Borderlands 2 co-op with Forrest and Pixel and Dying Light co-op with those 2 and berzerka.
Played quite a few games of Rocket League in the 2nd beta with Pixel and berzerka as well.
Played a fair bit of Diablo 3, some solo, some co-op and I’ve now hit paragon 350.
Still grinding away at Pure Pool, just another 30 levels to go.

  4. Completed the GTAV story missions and have been working on the side missions. Also managed to finally steal a P-996 Lazer fighter jet, now proudly parked in Trevors hangar :)

That got me thinking that an unexplored opportunity is the ability to develop the properties you own. So I’ve got a ramshackle airport in the desert, wouldn’t it be good to be able to develop it through several stages to become a working airport again and earn an income?

Likewise you could say buy plots of land across the map and then have several development options for each (wind farm, condos, businesses etc), with related missions such as taking out a nimby, bribing an official to give you permission to build, taking out an established rival company etc. Maybe in GTAVI(ce city :D)

Otherwise been trying very hard not to buy The Witcher 3!

  5. Bloodborne nothing else really, played a bit of the witcher, still not my top to play game at the moment, concentrating on bloodborne

    • How does Bloodborne compare to the little you’ve played of the Witcher?
As I’m not all impressed with the Witcher, I may trade it in tonight or tomorrow. It’s either try Bloodborne (even though I’m not a fan of RPGs) or hope the trade-in value doesn’t drop too much and wait for Batman.

      • I cannot recommend it highly enough, it’s brilliant, hard but brilliant. I dunno if you ever played any souls game but basically this is very similar, far from the witcher but makes you proud once you achieve your first killing.

        I recommend it

      • I also highly recommend it – it is hard in places – mostly the bosses or when you forget to learn from a previous mistake – but you probably won’t die half as much as you might expect. Also co-op is available should any bosses prove too frustrating. It’s linear but each area has plenty of exploration and shortcuts.
Have a look at some streams – or better still youtube vids of the first area – Central Yharnam.

      • Ok, cheers guys. I’ll probably try & find the best trade in deal I can tomorrow.

  6. Pretty much just Bloodborne this week. Don’t have much opportunity weeknights for anything more than a quick spot of Blood Echo farming so the weekends are where i do most of my playtime.
Since the last WWP i negotiated my way around Forbidden Woods back to a certain clinic, which provided me with a cool invite (and even cooler transport) to a certain Forsaken Castle, whilst also venturing into the Nightmare Frontier. I now have three areas with delightful new beasties to amuse and kill me, but i did take time out to say a final goodbye to an old Paarl.. ;)

  7. After finishing the first DLC last week, I finished (well, got 100% trophies for) the Ascendance DLC for CoD Advanced Warfare on PS4 to restore my overall 100%…at least until the 3rd DLC.

Lots of GTA 5 single player on PS3, really, really enjoying it. And my brother, Crazy_Del, Teflon and I finished the 4th heist…so just the big one to go!

On Vita (yes, Vita!!), I’ve done a few missions of Borderlands 2 since I’m visiting the in-laws.

  8. A tip for Dom in Halo, when playing Co-op take turns playing the part of spawn-point. It makes the Library (and everything else) reasonably easy but time consuming. Stick to human weaponry against the flood and progress slowly so you don’t herd too many enemies at once. You can often just run past them as well.

I’ve been playing a lot of Persona 4 The Golden, got started on Pokemon Platinum (I’m more drawn to the DS games than the new ones) and finished some university exams.

    • I’ve never found the Library difficult… in fact, I really quite enjoyed it even when playing on the top difficulty on Mac, way back in the day. Just got into the rhythm and flow on it and it was all fine.

  9. Another Witcher 3 fan.
I actually quite like the combat, it’s nothing like the usual type of fighting in open world games which tends to be a lot of button spamming. I must admit I haven’t played any souls games or bloodborne which I’ve heard has exquisite combat mechanics.
This game has grabbed me unlike any other game has in the ps4 era.

  10. Rayman Legends, which has been my favorite from the games with gold on xbox so far, though I’ve now got The Witcher 3 and will probably be on that for some time.
