Community Chronicle: 14/06/15

It might be the eve of E3’s manic week, but my focus for the last day has been locked onto the quite enthralling battles at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In particular, Porsche and Audi have been duking it out for almost the entire race, and you know it’s a very close fight when the lead changes dozens of times over the first 12 hours, very often doing so on track.

It looks like Porsche have things in the bag, as we enter the final hour, but you never quite know what’s going to happen, so keep those fingers crossed!

For some people, the biggest news of the week will have come from the re-confirmation of a new Mirror’s Edge game and the announcement of its title, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, as well as the fact that it will be something other than a sequel. A prequel, perhaps? A retelling? We’ll see at E3.

“Mirror’s Edge was one of the most underrated games of last gen, a masterpiece,” said Andrewww. “Cannot wait for a sequel, prequel, paraquel or whatever they want to call it, as long as the gameplay is as good as the first one’s.”

TSBonyman struggled a little with the original, but is optimistic that the last 7 years have advanced the gameplay somewhat, saying, “I liked the art style but i did not get on well with the controls/parkour mechanics. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve streamlined the parkour by now though so i might still be interested.”

Meanwhile, tactical20 is mainly optimistic that this could point to EA reviving other forgotten games in their back catalogue. He said, “The fact this is happening gives hope for all the other EA games from last gen that need a current gen release! No prizes for guessing what I’m talking about….”

Turns out that there should have been prizes, since he was talking about Skate.

On the other hand, you have the emerging rumours – fittingly first reported by The Guardian – that The Last Guardian is set to make a reappearance at this E3, and that Mark Cerny’s team at Japan Studio are helping to bring it to release.

With such a long time in development, CR8ZYH0RSE said, “As core elements were locked in as far back as 2009 I’ve high hopes this won’t be disappointing as some people think it will be. Hopefully all Cerney is doing is adding the finishing touches to an nearly finished game.”

However, BrendanCalls opined, “People have been waiting so long for it, if it comes out and it is not one of the best games ever, it’ll just take so much (probably unjustified) flack because people have been waiting so long for it that their expectations have swelled beyond reality.”

And, of course, beeje13 stepped in with a little wisecrack about this potential turn of events:

Cerny gets welcomed on stage, people cheer, expecting The Last Guardian.

Knack 2 announced. Deadly silence.

Finally, Google have fired shots across Twitch’s bow, with the announcement of YouTube Gaming. Though all of the technology has been in place for a long time, this marks a more concerted effort to steal some of the videogame streaming market away from Twitch.

Gazzagb said “Hmm. Until now, Youtube has really only been centre for lets plays and commentaries, while Twitch has the market captured for live streams, especially for eSports. So it’s difficult to see how this will turn out.

“While most viewers are loyal to the content creators, I can see youtube gaming becoming the one stop shop for streaming if they offer more money to streamers.”

Meanwhihle, NicholasHeathfield bitterly said, “What’s the point of Youtube doing game streaming if they’re just going to delete all the channels for violating copyrighted content claims,” to which I’d point out that Twitch implemented their own ContentID copyright infringement detection some time ago. The simpler thing to do is just to not infringe on copyrights in the first place, and turn off in game music as you stream.

It could be the rather good weather over the last week, the resurgent form of the England cricket team in one day internationals or having to ponder the picks in the E3 Bingo, but it’s been very quiet on the achievements front.

Indeed, this seems to be true as ron_mcphatty said he’d spent a lot of time next to the pool on holiday. Andrewww and Carrot381, meanwhile, have continued to sink a lot of their time into The Witcher 3, and blast71 has been pottering around with a lot of different games, but is gunning for the Call of Duty: Ghosts platinum.

Tactical20 finished Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China, judging it to be merely “alright”, but finding sheer delight in Child of Light, while Steelhead has found pure joy in his new Wii U, playing Splatoon and Mario Kart 8.

R1MJAW did manage to squeeze in a platinum, as he returned to Minecraft in amongst his collage of games, and managed to reach his 130th platinum overall.

Finally, Crazy_Del, having given up on chasing after trophies, seems to have bumbled his way past level 50 on his trophy card.

After a week away, A inferior race is back this week with the latest update to the 2015 trophy leaderboard. Head over to page 2 to see what it’s all about and how you can be counted.

  1. Woop, number two on the scoreboard! I hadn’t checked the scores before so that was a nice surprise. I hope those of you off to L.A. Enjoy yourselves, maybe aim for less margaritas and more sleep? Or not :)

    • We’re not in LA this year, unfortunately.
