Rocket League Spearheads July’s PlayStation Plus Update

Sony has announced this month’s selection of free games, available to all current PlayStation Plus subscribers. As in previous months, there’s a varied mix here, spanning all three major Sony platforms. As announced earlier this week, all PlayStation Plus updates will now fall on Tuesdays as opposed to their previous Wednesday slot. This change will come into force as of next.

Another surprise for PlayStation fans is this month’s featured game, Rocket League. This racing/footie hybrid is the sequel to one PSN’s all-time greats, the awkwardly titled Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket Powered Battle Cars. Psyonix’s spiritual successor went into beta very recently (our impressions) and we even had the chance to sit down and chat with the developer. In short, Rocket League is already shaping up to be a must-have. It’s quite fitting, then, that Sony are offering the game to everyone!

Hot on its heels we also have Styx Master of Shadows, Cynaide’s unique and complex fantasy stealth ’em up. If you’re looking for something challenging and original, look no further. Make sure you red Stefan’s review here.

We also have Entwined along with three very high rated games in the form of Geometry Wars 3, MouseCraft, and the eerily beautiful Rain.

Lest we forget, Driveclub PS Plus Edition finally made its long-awaited debut earlier this week. With a cluster of cars, and an entire region to race in, it’s bound to bring a few more clubbers into the fold.

  1. Oh good. A sequel to a game we got years ago. Fun idea that doesn’t keep your interest for too long. Hopefully the beta gave them all the information they needed on how to make the servers not so flakey.

Styx looks interesting (but yet another stealthy game. Grr)

Mousecraft was one of those things that looked interesting but was going to inevitably be a PS+ game anyway, so I never bought it. Result.

Rain is worth a go though. Even if I did pick it up in a sale a while back.

Entwined gets my vote for “this is what people will moan about the most” this month. (It’s actually not too bad)

    • Played Rain at egx a while back. Granted, probably not really the place to be experiencing that sort of game for the first time, but all I could think of whilst playing was “dull, dull, dull”.

It’s just a bit rainy (which the title probably comes from) & you hide from monsters was all I remember – That’s enough for me to avoid it now. Need to save HDD space anyway, as I couldn’t actually fit a simple patch on last night! :O

Everything else I cannot comment on, as I haven’t actually played any of them for once (though I do support less stealth games too!).

    • Just pray that they don’t start a trend for Stealth Rogue Likes! All a bit meh for me this month. Wasn’t a fan of the first super duper you can’t bend it rocket car game and the second one gives me the same ‘ruined a perfectly good game of football’ vibes but those are the breaks.

      • You can’t “ruin a perfectly good game of football”. It’s such a tedious sport that whatever you do to it can only improve things.

Improvements can include rocket cars. Nudity. Releasing the tigers. Multiball. Just about anything, really.

      • Haha, I agree with MrYd on that. Vanilla football is indeed tedious stuff, certainly to watch anyway. But add some rocket powered super sonic cars into the mix and you actually make things interesting and fun. Adding tigers and extra balls as well sounds like a good shout too.

      • Tigers would only be released in the second half.

The ball would become locked if it went off the end, and once 3 balls were locked, scoring a goal would release them all.

At the end of the game, all the locked balls would be released to slowly roll down the pitch, in a slightly sad way.

Not that I’ve thought about it too much, obviously. Or the nudity. ;)

      • Where the hell are the Bitmap Brothers when you need them?

  2. Can’t wait to get stuck into Rocket League, we (myself, Pixel and berzerka) had a fantastic time playing both betas. Would have been buying it anyway but getting it as part of PS+ is even better.

    • Now it’s out of Beta (as I have a rule to not test software unless I am getting paid for it!) & I will be getting it for free, I may jump in with you guys to see what all the fuss is about! :)

      • Sounds like a TSA Meet shaping up ;)

    • Awwww yeah RL free :) :) :) that is all I have to say :)

  3. Rocket League looks like fun, I’ve wanted to pick up Styx on Steam before (but haven’t), and with Driveclub finally being released it looks like there’s not much stopping me subbing.

Is Driveclub in a playable state yet?

    • Normal version of DC is (it’s actually quite good), no idea about the plus version unfortunately.

    • It works perfectly, even if I am not a fan.

    • I have been playing DC+ on and off since sun gone and I am quite enjoying it and im not a big racer fan. The graphics are stunning, was racing on some track in the startline tour in a suped up mini and it was lashing rain and entered a tunnel in the game and exited the tunnel in real life!

    • Yeah, do it! DC is superb, if you like racing and one-more-try social competition elements. Also, Rocket League and Styx, sounds like a great month to take the Plus plunge!

      • Do you know if that code you sent me months a go will still work (if you didn’t use it)? Did I have to buy 3 months from PSN or could I buy a 3 month voucher elsewhere and it would still work?

  4. for the first time in months, i haven’t got any of the plus games.

of the titles, Styx is the highlight for me.
been wanting to try it, though, obviously not enough to actually, you know, buy it. ^_^

  5. Styx is the highlight for me this month but I’ve just checked out some gameplay footage of the others and I think I’ll end up trying them all.

Geometry Wars looks a bit like Resogun and the others look decent enough.

Already played Rain when it was first released and thought it was great. More of an Autumn/Winter game though I recon.

    • You should give Geometry Wars a go. It’s very different to Resogun.

  6. Rocket League it is, debuting on plus am I right? I haven’t seen it on the store yet…

  7. Loved the rocket League beta. Should be ace having so many people to play against, what with PS+ and playing with PC gamers.

  8. Great month, Rocket League on PS4 really makes it, excellent news! Can’t wait to get stuck in.

  9. This is a brilliant month with lots of really good and quite different games. I’m especially pleased as, for once, I don’t own most of them!
I’m looking forward to playing Rocket League as the last one was pretty fun and the rest have been on my watchlist for awhile.
