What We Played #210: Yoshi’s Wooly World, Batman & Lego Jurassic World

You might not believe this but in the midst of all this excruciatingly hot weather, we’ve still managed to play games here at TSA. Not only that, but we still intend to tell you all about them in a little piece we like to call What We Played. Such an original title, isn’t it?

Speaking of the heat, Tuffcub says he spent his week playing Destiny, and being sweaty on the London Underground. In fact, the song he had on while telling me about this included the lyrics, “sweat, sweat, sweat dripping off.” Oh, and he also played a bit of Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition, but not as much as he would’ve liked.

Dom spent a touch of his week playing Skulls of the Shogun and The Elder Scrolls Online, the latter of which seems to have hugely benefited from its most recent patch. But he spent most of his week playing Batman: Arkham Knight, which he says he’s loved, although now that he’s in the latter portion of the game he stated that he’s starting to see what all the Batmobile complaints were about. Finally, Dom played some Lego Jurassic World with his son, but I’ll let him tell you about that.

It’s safe to say that it’s the most enjoyable LEGO game I’ve/we’ve played. The amount of content in these games is a bit daunting, and after twenty hours we’re only 32% complete! I genuinely think we’ll get everything in it eventually, though it’s making me constantly hum the Jurassic World theme which is the only thing wearing thin!

Jim began his week dipping in and out of Driveclub, which he says he still thoroughly enjoys. From there, he played (and reviewed) J-Stars Victory VS+, which he enjoyed, but he said it’s “clearly meant for the manga/anime die-hards.” Finally he sat back down with Watch Dogs. Jim has been after the final trophy in that game for some time, which required him to collect all the songs. Unfortunately, he discovered that he needed to reset his game data to get it, but that didn’t stop him. He started over, beat the whole thing and got that pesky platinum trophy. What a gamer!

Miguel has been playing a handful of niche fighting games this week, and says that he can’t recommend Fate/Unlimited Codes enough. It does require an import but he says it’s completely worth it. After that, he sunk his time into Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, which he says is his favorite horror game. He wrapped up his week getting in all sorts of trouble in GTA Online. Heists, robberies and selling gang cars – he just couldn’t help himself.

Mark keeps digging through what he says is his game of the year so far, Batman: Arkham Knight. He’s mostly stuck with the main story but said he’s looking forward to tackling all the side stuff as well. He also spent some time with Yoshi’s Wooly World. He’s particularly enjoyed it because it reminds him of Yoshi’s Island, which he says is still one of the best platformers he’s ever played.

Stefan is up next and like many other people, he’s been bothered by the heat. Here’s his tale:

I’ve been playing a number of things this week, but my problem has been that my house has simply been too damned hot! Even if I felt like turning on a console, I’m not sure I could bear to put it through that kind of heat stress! But, there have been games of Vainglory on tablet, I’ve engrossed myself in The Swindle and even delved into Nintendo’s catalogue of upcoming games, with things like Mario Maker and Starfox. You can read all about them either right now or some time next week.

Blair took control of Batman again this week and he’s managed to complete everything in Arkham Knight except for the Riddler trophies. He says that watching the final ending on YouTube sounds more appealing that trying to collect all those trophies, so that might be what he ends up doing. He also started Bayonetta 2, which he says is a marked improvement over its predecessor, “with some huge battles that blow the first game out of the water.”

As for me, I continue to play Rust with a good friend of mine, though these forced server wipes that reset all our progress each month have made us re-think all the time we’re logging. I’m also still in the middle of The Witcher 3, though I swear I’m nearing the end of it. And since I’ve done every side quest and contract along the way, I’m actually nearing the end of the game outside of visiting all the unexplored areas of the map.

That’s about it for us. We loved reading your stories about your first game memory last week, so let us know what you’ve been playing during this sweltering heat. Speaking of heat, for our weekly question, let us know your favorite game or gaming memory that involved using some kind of fire.

  1. The amazing Burning Rangers on the Sega Saturn has to be my number one fire in gaming memory, closely followed by calling for back-up in Streets Of Rage and raining fire on the bad guys!

  2. Cannot believe that we have gotten to page two without anyone mentioning burning the weed crops in Far Cry 3 (which if I recall was accompanied by the Skrillex song featuring Damian Marley – Make it bun dem?). That was a pretty good mission.

Truth is though, I likely just recall that as it is more recent – I’m sure that there have been many things over time that have died at the hands of fire that have been equally awesome.

As for this week, Borderlands 2 on Monday & the rest of my time has pretty much been spent on Destiny. Yes, that’s right, the game I quite publicly quit last week. For some reason, I had the urge to visit Xur last Friday & use up my motes on engrams (for no particular reason), but then as the game seemingly knew I was quitting it decided to throw 2 of the 3 helmets I needed at me, so have been spending a bit of time upgrading those. So easily drawn in. :/

That was definitely not the highlight of the week though, as that accolade is reserved for the Flawless Raider run that was accomplished on Tuesday. Many thanks go to Ash & Miffy for lending a hand with that (& Tony Cawley for offering too) & a hearty well done to Thebezerka, Toutski & Commisar_Dave for their participation & receipt of the Flawless Raider trophy.

An extra congratulations goes to Dave who actually netted his first platinum trophy from doing said raid as well.

  3. Finished The Witcher on the 29th and i’m gutted it’s all over until October when the first part of the main dlc is out.I’ll do the second playthrough in September so i something to look forward to.
As for fire the dragons dream bomb in the Witcher is pretty cool for setting enemies on fire, just throw and igni, boom.

  4. Ooh fire starters in games has to include Ramiro the “ram” from Total Overdose on PS2. A mention also for Just Cause 2 which was a veritable feast of arson! :P

  5. Fire? Well there was Far Cry 2 and setting fire to a tree outside a camp of wicker buildings, it was fantastic how fire spread in that game.

I also quite like CoD WAW’s flamethrower and snuffing out bunkers with it

Then most satisfying of all, nailing a group of murderous sods with a one hit Molotov in TLoU and then giving a pleasant grin at their inevitable humiliation. It was combustion at it’s best.

  6. I’ve mainly been playing Catherine on the PS3. Wanted to cross that off my pile of shame. Still a few levels to go, it sure gets difficult, but I’m enjoying it a lot more than I expected.

I’ve only got in one session of Yoshi, but it seems really good. A lot of my gaming time has been turned into reading time thanks to a shiny new Kindle.

I didn’t mention my earliest gaming memory last week, but I think it was a nice version of Snake on MS-DOS.
