Fresh No Man’s Sky Footage Reveals UI, Mining And End-game Details

Sean Murray of Hello Games recently sat down with the folks over at IGN to spend some time playing No Man’s Sky, answering questions and showing a few things we hadn’t previously seen. For starters, the 18 minutes of video is about as much as we’ve collectively seen thus far so if you’re eagerly anticipating its release, the footage is worth checking out even without the new details. But if it’s new info you’re looking for, it has some of that, too.

We’ve heard about the in-game periodic table they’re using for mining and crafting, but the video gives us a much closer look at that, as you can see elements filling up as Sean mines his way through rocks and crystals. You also get a peek at what the inventory, suit, weapon and ship management screens all look like, and you also get to see Sean apply an upgrade to a gun that allows him to mine new materials. He also spends some time clarifying how the wanted system works and reiterating just how big this game actually is.

Finally, Sean talked a little more about what happens when you reach the center of the galaxy, which he says will be the primary goal for a lot of players. He stated that when you get there, many will find that’s a good place to end the game, but he also mentioned that the game changes a bit after you arrive, and that there will definitely be a reason to keep playing if you haven’t had your fill.

  1. Still not sure what the actual point is?! Yes, it’s beyond vast and all very clever, but if all you can do is scan lifeforms to fill in a never ending encyclopedia, or mine/trade to earn money for never ending ship upgrades, it simply just doesn’t sound that fun, or even original?

    • I’m with you on the point of this game just looking all that much fun.
I’m not quite as impressed as the interviewer who remarks several times “Wow!”, and he’s especially impressed when the player travels from planet surface in to space, as though that’s something never done before in a game.

    • What if at the center of the game you get the abillity to meet other players ? :D I keep hoping this feature pops up somehow.

    • You have clearly never graced the old game of Elite…No Mans Sky is just exactly the same as that albeit more detailed, in Elite you simply traded, fought and did very sporadic missions…that was it.

Yet many old skool gamers like myself lost half our youth to it, it is incredibly addictive…I say give No Mans Sky a shot, I’m sure most will not regret it.

      • homerjnick, I’m also of the original Elite on BBC and Speccy generation (I feel ancient). I too loved the original game back then, but I just wonder whether NMS has the perceived depth of Elite, or indeed whether the original Elite was just amazing at the time because there was so little to it that we let our imaginations fill in the blanks and imagination is often better than reality… Hmmm. Let’s wait and see whether NMS fulfill’s the void.

      • Yep, count me in as one of the Speccy Elite crew too, but for some reason this just isn’t appealing to me.

      • Remember Elite fondly as there really was nothing like it when it came out. Just cruising around the solar system and scooping up cargo was relaxingly wonderful. Especially to The Blue Danube Waltz.

If any game has taught me that doing very little is still serenely enjoyable, it’s Flower. Bring No Man’s Sky on! It just won’t suit the battle-nerds, that’s all.

      • Original Elite oldie here too (Although, it was C64 version for me) and also a big fan of the new Elite:Dangerous as well.. I’m on the fence with this one, I really like the look of it, but Im not sure what it brings that E:D doesnt..

    • I believe they deliberatly aren’t giving too much away as they want players to discover everything for themselves – a bit like how Minecraft began apparently, with the wiki gradually becoming more complete as people discovered what they could actually do in the game.

  2. Has anyone noticed the tension between the the two chaps in this video as they can’t hold a face to face chat and make eye contact? Several times they’re breaking gaze in turn with each other, like some sort of mating dance. I can feel tension from all the way over here in Gloucestershire.

    • I just think Ryan is weird, just a weird guy. Sometimes he does this nice articles and gives off a good vibe and sometimes he makes the most embarrassing statements.

  3. Please be Project Morpheus Please be Project Morpheus Please be Project Morpheus

  4. Should never compare a new game with one from 30 years ago. Nostalgia is a killer!

  5. This is the game that I’ve always wanted someone to make!
I really cant wait for this! :)

    • My exact sentiments my fellow TSA’er! This will be the one and only game I will buy a collectors edition (if there is one) The game just blows my mind everytime I see it.
