What We Played #213: The Talos Principle, Fallout Shelter & Journey

A bright hello and a happy end of the week to all of you out there. And since it is the end of the week, what do you say we have another round of What We Played? You know, the piece where we tell you all about the games we’ve been playing? No? Too bad, we’re doing it anyway.

Kris gets us rolling this week and for some reason he thought it would be an awesome idea to break his wrist. It turns out, it’s not that awesome and it hasn’t been great for him playing games, but he did manage Mr. Umbrella on iOS. He says it’s a platformer that has you navigating a fellow with an umbrella through clockwork gears as they open and close, all while the character is slowly falling toward the bottom of the screen. He says it’s a bit tricky but it seems like he’s enjoying it.

Mark hasn’t had an eventful week of gaming but he has been continuing through the long list of Riddler trophies in Batman: Arkham Knight. He also took the time to play a bit of Yoshi’s Wooly World, which he’s still enjoying.

Dave played his fair share of games this week, starting with The Vanishing of Ethan Carter on PS4. He reviewed it and awarded it a solid 7 out of 10 score, though he noted it is a little light on gameplay. He then played Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, which he says he’s nearly done with as only one dungeon stands between him and the finale. Finally, Lewis convinced him to play Fallout Shelter so he’s been trying his hand at that. He’s up to 28 residents and says his approval rating is consistently at about 94%.

Tuffcub is still on his amazing trip to Hawaii, and joked about playing the real life version of Wander, though he has noticed a lot less pop up than in the game.

Jim started his week with Crash Bandicoot and Door Kickers on iPad, but soon moved on to something a little bigger:

First and foremost there’s Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn on PlayStation 4. Since my early teens I’ve always been fascinated by MMORPGs yet, despite my best efforts, I’ve only hit the “endgame” for a very select few. Put simply, they require an enormous amount of investment, of both time and commitment. Fingers crossed I’ll hit the level cap and plough my way through the Heavensward expansion.

Stefan went back to Fallout Shelter yet again this week, though he says he’s nearing the end of his rope with it, despite building a Nuka-Cola bottling plant. He’s also getting a little worn out on Destiny, so it led him to pick up the expansion to The Talos Principle, Road to Gehenna. He called it a fascinating experience, though he says it’s making him wonder if he’s actually a person. He’s also been playing The Swindle, a game you’ll see a review for next week.

Between a holiday and being sick (which tends to happen a lot when you get super-duper old), Dom had 12 straight days off, and boy did he make the most of them. He played (deep breath) Monster Hunter Ultimate 3 and Devil’s Third on Wii U, Rory McIlory PGA Tour, the PS4 version of Journey, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign, Injustice, Ultra Street Fighter IV, Disgaea 4 and One Piece Unlimited World Red. You can read his review for Rory McIlory here, and a nice piece he wrote about Journey here.

As for me, it was kind of light week as I only really played one game. I bought Anno 2070 on Steam after watching a preview for the new one that launches later this year. Ubisoft’s absolutely atrocious Uplay launcher and DRM garbage aside, it’s a pretty fun city builder for a guy who hasn’t played a city builder in… ever? I found myself pretty impressed at how intuitive the design is for how complex the game seems to be, even for someone new to this type of game.

And that’ll about do it. Between the broken bones and sickness here at TSA, the place is pretty much falling apart, yet we still played games. That means you have no excuses and must tell us what you’ve been playing. If you don’t, Dom is going to hunt you down with his illness and threaten you with unrelenting hugs. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

  1. Still playing Borderlands 2 co-op with Forrest and Pixel.
Got stuck into the Awesome Level Max dlc for Trials Fusion.
This week though has been mainly Rory McIlroy PGA Tour which I obtained the platinum for in the early hours of this morning.
Picked up QUBE and Bastion from the store, so far I’ve only played through the first 3 sections of QUBE but I may get stuck into Bastion over the weekend.

  2. DriveClub (no surprises there!) and a short stint on The Witcher 3 after the huge patch finally downloaded – BT-OpenReach really need to pull their finger out and solve the “engineering difficulties”!

  3. Got 2 new games to distract me from finishing Batman. Journey (yawn) and Need for Speed Rivals (meh). Back to Batman then!

    • Oh no, why ‘meh’ for Rivals? I love it but seem to be in the minority.
I’ve been playing GTA Online, which is anything but meh. I like to do a mixture of things including dispensing vigilante style justice on those who pick on the poor noobs pootling around, visiting LS Customs and staring at the pretty views. I don’t have a gero name yet though…

      • It’s ok. Just feels like I’ve played it all before in Hot Pursuit, etc.. Nothing new, but can’t complain too much for £12! And Journey was free!

      • That’s true, it is very similar, and I preferred Hot Pursuit. I guess I really like it because for a long time it was the only proper racer on the PS4.

  4. For me is a double platinum week 1st off I got platinum out of Rachet and Clank into the Nexus and just a few moments ago I got platinum out of LBP3. At this moment I can’t stop getting trophies. It’s annoying me like an addiction. Never mind off to Paris tomorrow to watch the Tour de France come through again. Au revoir.

  5. I’ve been getting owned on advanced warfare multiplayer, strangely enjoying it tho. Bit of Driveclub online (or should that be “dodge the ramming twats every corner who use your car as a brake” club). A bit of rocket league but only single-player until I get used to it. Plus getting wet at work, which isn’t as good as the other games ;)

    • Didn’t I see you play Skyrim the other day? Reminded me I’ve never finished that storyline… ;o)

      • I think that was over a week ago, having a break from grinding up the levels to meet a legendary dragon ;)

    • Ok, just seen your trophy count for Skyrim. Wow. Consider me impressed.

      • The oblivion walker trophy glitched so I’m going to have to start again for the platinum, currently trying for the legendary dragon one & vampire Lord perk before I do tho because the dragon doesn’t appear until you get to level 70-80. I’m on 69 so not far to go ;)

  6. Not much this week due to re-organising the house but i had time to play some more Wolfenstein and about half of Journey, with a dip into Driveclub along the way.

  7. I’ve not played owt all week. Not even bothered turning my ps4 on.

  8. Mostly still Witcher 3, concentrating a little more on the main storyline, not to get enough of it before that is finished.
Was away on holidays a couple of days and had little time to play. However, I had a quick look at Virtue’s last reward on the Vita, and was surprised how good it is. Will definitely play that some more.

  9. been playing ESO.
    really enjoying it.
the random disconnects, not so much.

they can happen at any time.
    buying some potions, random dc.
    talking to somebody, random dc.
    crafting something, random dc.
just about to kill a boss, random dc.
running somewhere, yep, you guessed it, random dc.

and it takes the game an age to realise, you just can’t perfom any actions, suddenly the person you’re talking to stops responding, or you can’t buy those items off the vendor, or you can no longer attack, or sprint, jumping works and you can still move, but everything else has frozen.

you just have to wait for the game to figure out it’s not connected.
and like i said, that takes way too long.
you can’t log out, the game just freezes if you try.

but until it does inevitably disconnect, it’s bloody great fun.

  10. As usual played Borderlands with Forrest an R1MJAW on Monday, picked up the Platinum for Rocket League on Tuesday, not much else other than a bit of Rory Mcllroy some Titanfall and then Friday night was Dying Light with Berzerka,R1M and Forrest don’t know if I’ve missed anything out.
