Driveclub Passes 2 Million Sales

Is a week full of nice round milestones, and Paul Rustchynsky has added another to the list, posting on Twitter the arrival of a double platinum disc plaque to signify passing two million sales of Driveclub.

It’s an impressive achievement considering the game’s difficult launch, but the game is now in the form it should have been at release. Last month saw the PlayStation Plus edition being made available to subscribers, the servers are generally stable and Evolution have just finished releasing content from the game’s season pass, with more planned for the future.

Even so, you can’t help but wonder what might have been if launch had gone smoothly.

  1. Well deserved. Roll on another Season Pass – Value for money wise, that’s gotta be the best £20 I’ve ever spent!

    • Best £20 you’ve ever spent? You, Sir, have clearly never been to Black Cherry in Worcester.

      • Or Cherry Buster, Hull :P

      • Don’t tempt me! I’ve been behaved lately & haven’t stepped in a tittle bar for about a month.
It looks bad when you enter one with clients & all the girls know your name.

      • You sound like G W’s mate lol

      • Mr naughty 40

    • Spearmint Rhino , Brum . Needs a revisit me thinks

  2. Well done Evolution, fantastic game!

  3. I don’t like racing games but I thought Drive Club was great and 2 million sales is pretty impressive considering.

The price drop probably helped and word of mouth. I only heard great things about the game which is one of the reasons I bought it.

I think people recognised that despite all the issues they had at launch, it was still a great game at it’s core.

  4. After playing loads of project cars I just couldn’t get into DC…even when using a wheel. Watching my car was like watching a pinball bouncing round.
I do plan to give it another go but don’t know if I’ll bother upgrading from the free ps+ version.

    • I was going to say the same thing. I used to love Driveclub, but after having played a lot of Project CARS, Driveclub just didn’t feel right when I went back to it. It’s a shame, because I prefer the career mode in Driveclub. Project CARS is a far superior racer, in my opinion, but the single player mode sucks.

    • Yeah the handling is so fake, compared to PC, FH2. It’s the main thing that put me off.

  5. I’m enjoying it at the moment, even if it is the psplus vanilla version.

  6. That must be physical sales, right?

Considering how VGchartz always undertracks – they estimate physical sales (as they can’t track downloads) to be 1,70 mio – and that the download version has been dead cheap for a while (thus accounting for a large percentage of the sales, if not the biggest part), it seems more likely that we are talking about physical sales only.

  7. Downloaded the PS+ version and that’s as far as it went. Rocket League by comparison I’ve played loads along with Project Cars :)

  8. Got the game on release and still enjoying it. The double platinum disc is well deserved.

  9. ‘Even so, you can’t help but wonder what might have been if launch had gone smoothly’

Indeed, the cagey crowd just bided their time and reaped the rewards. Me, myself and I on the other hand, like many others needed a solid next gen racer thus plumped for the best on offer with a view of utter optimism towards the end result. It all came to fruition in the end but as the quote suggests….it is quite possible that an even higher accolade could have been achieved.

  10. I wonder how many of those sales were full price though. Quarter of a million at best I think. By comparison Infamous sold a million in 9 days with half as many PS4’s out there. I don’t think there will be a sequel.

    • Yeah I can’t see a sequel. Hope they do something more exciting like another MotorStorm.

And just checked DC sales. It sold 600k+ physical copies in the first month, so they would be full price I think. But a portion of them would have been bundled with consoles too.

      • Yeah a motorstorm on PS4 could look seriously impressive. The locations in a pacific rift style would look great.

    • Do you not think they’ve done a very good job of turning around a truly broken game into something highly enjoyable (and stable). Sure, they’ve learnt the hard way (and then some) but it’s been to the benefit of the gamer in the long run. Just such a shame that it started so catastrophically.

      • Yep they did deliver in the end but the attitude of “release it now, fix it later” isn’t a good one to have. Though of course they aren’t the only ones to do that.

I think the people that waited got the best deal, a cheaper game that was working as intended.

      • Nothing to dispute there. Was just curious if you thought they’d done well with hitting two million. That was all. Cheers for the reply, fella. :-)
