Ubisoft Explain How Zombi Works On PS4, PC & Xbox One Without A Second Screen

Ubisoft have revealed how the functions previously accessed on the Wii U gamepad, such as the map and backpack, will be replicated on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

“We knew from the beginning that maintaining the tension and feel of the original was one of the main challenges, as the way ZombiU was presented on Wii U cannot be reproduced,” says Hélène Henry, Zombi’s producer.

The minimap, previously located on the gamepad, has been moved onto the main screen, “We maintain a minimal HUD as much as possible,” Henry says. “It disappears when not required, giving the game a very lonely feeling. If you have surround sound, the awesome sound mix from the original still stands and greatly helps immersion. As much as possible, we’ve tried to keep those key elements.”

When you access the backpack it will fill most of the screen and the game will not pause, leaving you open to attack. Only zombies creeping in from the edge of the screen will be visible, “We kept the central idea that you’re always vulnerable,” said Henry.

The field of view has been increased slightly and Ubisoft promise the game “will perform better on newer consoles”.

The cricket bat returns along with two new weapons. The shovel “offers longer range ” while the nail bat “gives you more damage and a higher critical-hit chance”. Both weapons let you attack mutiple zombies with one swing. The flashlight has been tweaked and you can use a wider, further-reaching beam at the expense of battery, and will require at least 30 seconds recharge time.

One aspect of the game that will not be making it’s way to heftier consoles is ZombiU’s single-system multiplayer. Rather than remake the experience without the second screen Ubisoft decided “to focus on the solo mode, as we believe this is where the ZombiU experience really lay.”

  1. I really enjoyed this on the Wii U, I doubt I’ll double dip as it’s not really a game you’d play twice because you know where the zombies etc will be located.

    Decent game though.

  2. They could easily add a companion app/Second Screen Remote Play/SmartGlass option too…
