Community Chronicle: 30/08/15

I hope you’re all making good use of the bank holiday weekend. Perhaps you’ve flitted off to a music festival or gone out for a few drinks with friends? Maybe you’ve stayed in bed watching anime all day, or have been playing some of the big new games like Until Dawn or a copy of Metal Gear Solid V that has shown up early?

There’s nothing quite like a bit of displeasure to get the fingers waggling at a keyboard, it seems, and the subject of your scorn this week was the PlayStation Plus Instant Game Collection announcement, in large part because of how it stacked up against Microsoft’s Games with Gold scheme.

Amphlett said, “I bet the Microsoft Games With Gold team almost wet themselves when the saw Sony’s PS+ line up announcement yesterday,” to which Avenger replied, “It’s funny that MS haven’t done much special here. Sony are pretty much doing it to themselves.”

The problem many people see, of course, is the dearth of AAA games on PS+, whereas Xbox Live subscribers are getting Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition and Crysis 3. JR. noted, however, that “MS are in quite a good position here. They can give away decent last gen games with Gold that Sony already gave us 2-3 years ago. Unless Sony start giving us the same games again which probably wouldn’t go down very well. I do wish they would start throwing in a few AAA games with plus on the PS4 but I suppose they’re not really under any preassure to yet.”

But maybe we’ve all come to expect too much from either side of the fence? There’s always a whiff of disappointment whenever each month’s games are announced.

Sticking with Microsoft, Square Enix revealed the Rise of the Tomb Raider collector’s edition this week, replete with a large model and faux shipping crate.

Naturally there are those like Crazy_Del who see these collections and think to themselves, “Ohhhhhh want! Will look around for the UK hoping it is not exclusively from Game!” sitting opposite those like TSBonyman, who said he’s “Not into collecting this stuff myself but I’m looking forward to the game.”

Then again, he also didn’t really like the look of the statue, saying, “I would have expected a statue which represented the new Lara better. ie blood-splattered, murderous scowl, and cross-eyed for the new crossbow dual-targeting ability.”

JR. probably needs a break though, as he asked, “Is anyone else seeing the Fireflies symbol on the crate?”

One more little news snippet for you, as YouTube Gaming – their answer to Twitch’s streaming platform – went live this week, having been announced a few months back.

In response to my very own wise words, Pitcher-T wrote, “Completely agree that they need to hit the ground running with this. Hopefully their experience with current streaming should help.  Hopefully they will have a new app, as the only time I use YouTube on my TV/PS4 is by using my phone to throw it to the TV.”

However, while they’ve nailed the streaming service itself, it seems as though they’ve stumbled with the user interface, with both MrYd and Sitorimon complaining. MrYd explained:

Well, it’s live now. And the user interface is not something I was expecting from Google. It’s kind of a hideous mess where they’ve just slapped all the features on screen and left it at that. It’s like something from the 1990s but without the hilarious animated under construction gif.

On the other hand, the streaming seems to work very well. Click on a live stream, it starts instantly. Click somewhere back in time, it starts playing from there. Instantly. Click on “live”, and it jumps back to now and carries on streaming.

But that UI is terrible.

Ouch.

Chronicle-achievements-sticker

It’s been a rather slow week in the achievements section, but Youles gets us off to a good start. He’s grabbed the platinum for Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, which though he found the walking dull, featured an interesting story and fantastic music. He then sped things up a bit to get 100% of the trophies for Black Ops 2’s Vengeance DLC and passed trophy level 28. Speaking of such major milestones, R1MJAW has swept past a whopping 12500 trophies!

Kennykazey managed to squeeze in several episodes of Tales from the Borderlands this week, amidst a few games of Mario Party and some Pokémon Platinum. Meanwhile, TSBonyman worked his way through the Fox Tales DLC for Never Alone, finding it just as charming as the main game, but still suffering from a  few AI hiccups.

By the time I write this, ron_mcphatty ought to have finished the Racer campaign for NFS Rivals, and here’s hoping that Carrot381 has had luck in plugging away at the 555 5’s trophy in Fat Princess: Piece of Cake.

However, my heart goes out to hornet1990, whose Fallout Vault was savaged by a trio of Deathclaws. He’s still plugging away at it though, and is rebuilding with an eye to being able to defend itself better next time.

A inferior race has been busily tapping your latest trophies into his tables, and you can head over to page 2 to view the latest trophy leaderboard. Meanwhile, I leave you with the usual submissions form below:

  1. I have indeed finished NFS, thanks for speculating! And I was jammy enough to get MGS in the post yesterday morning, that’s never happened to me before so I’m feeling really lucky and pleased! The game is incredible, I’ve barely scratched the surface and in already loving it, I don’t want to give too much away but the base management is superb and the story is so far utterly engrossing. Big Boss is different now and it makes sense so Kiefer does a good job, you Metal Gear fans are in for a treat.

    • Oh and Tef, I spent ten minutes cosmetically copying myself, was that a pointless excercise? Yes or no will do, I don’t want to be a spoiler spanner :)

      • That’s something for the long term.

      • Nice, thanks. I came acrossthe Customise menu last night and found myself. After playing with the puppy for a solid ten minutes.

  2. After gaining some miscellaneous trophies from I am Bread and completing the Claptastic Voyage dlc for Borderlands Pre Sequel I have hit trophy level 44 on exactly 12550 trophies.
